May Bank Holiday Pest Control

JG Pest Control is open on both May bank holidays: the Early May bank holiday (first Monday in May) and the Spring bank holiday (last Monday in May). While most of the pest control industry takes both Mondays off, our phones are answered and our technicians are working from early morning to late evening on both days. BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians on every callout, no bank holiday surcharge, free quote on the phone.

The May bank holidays sit on the edge of peak wasp season. The Early May bank holiday is often the first weekend warm enough to trigger wasp queen nesting activity. The Spring bank holiday at the end of the month is when the first nests are well established and become visible. Both weekends drive a sharp climb in wasp callouts, beer garden ant treatments and hospitality rodent work.

Two May bank holidays, three weeks apart

The UK has two May bank holidays in normal years. The Early May bank holiday falls on the first Monday in May. The Spring bank holiday falls on the last Monday in May. They are usually three to four weeks apart, with the second often falling close to or coinciding with the Whitsun half-term break for schools.

For pest control demand, the two bank holidays are quite different. The Early May bank holiday triggers the first sustained outdoor weekend of the year for hospitality. Beer gardens are full, outdoor catering picks up, and the first significant wasp queen activity appears as overnight temperatures stop dropping into single figures. The Spring bank holiday is later, warmer, and lines up with the start of peak wasp nest establishment.

We treat both bank holidays as full trading days. Same-day cover across all major UK cities, no surcharge, full callout service.

Top May bank holiday callouts

  • Wasp queen nest establishment
  • First wasp nest sightings
  • Beer garden wasp pressure

Peak wasp season starts late May

Wasp activity follows a very predictable annual curve. Queen emergence in early spring (Easter), nest establishment through April and early May, worker production from mid-May, peak nest size and aggression by late August. The Spring bank holiday in late May is the inflection point where nests transition from a small queen-led starter colony to a fast-growing worker colony.

For homeowners, this is the last cheap-and-easy window to treat a nest before it becomes a peak-season problem. A wasp nest in late May is typically the size of a tennis ball or smaller, with a few dozen workers. The same nest in late August will be the size of a football, with several thousand workers and a far more aggressive defence response. Treatment is the same single-visit job, but the experience of having the nest on the property in late May versus late August is night and day.

Where nests appear by late May

  • Loft spaces, especially around eaves and roof beams
  • Soffits and fascia boards on the outside of the property
  • Garden sheds and outbuildings
  • Roof voids accessed via air bricks
  • Compost bins and stacked garden waste
  • Hedgerows, particularly in established gardens
  • Bird boxes that have not been cleared since last summer

If you have noticed wasps repeatedly entering and exiting the same spot on the building, or you can see a small grey papery structure, the nest is real and it will grow. The earlier we treat, the smaller it stays.

Wasp nest spotted? Treat now.

Late May nests are small. August nests are huge. Treatment is the same job.

Hospitality on the May bank holidays

The May bank holidays are the first sustained outdoor trading weekends of the year for pubs, restaurants and hotels. Beer gardens fill up, outdoor service runs all day, the first significant wasp pressure of the season appears, and bin areas come under real stress from extended trading hours and warmer ambient temperatures.

Common commercial callouts over the May bank holidays:

  • Beer garden wasp pressure: wasps homing in on sugar (drinks, fruit garnishes), driving complaints from outdoor diners. Often the first sign of a nest on or near the property.
  • Pub kitchen fly issues: longer trading, warmer kitchens, more food waste, more flies. Bluebottle and houseflies are the main offenders.
  • Restaurant bin area rats: May is when rat activity around commercial bin areas returns to significant volume after winter.
  • Hotel mid-season check: bedrooms used continuously since Easter, occupancy climbing, bed bug risk now meaningfully higher than the start of the season.
  • Event catering: May bank holidays drive a wave of outdoor events, weddings and festivals with temporary catering kitchens needing pre-event inspection.

We provide same-day commercial bank holiday cover including pre-service inspections on bank holiday mornings. Standing arrangements are common for hospitality groups that need consistent cover across the May, August and Christmas windows.

Ant treatments on May bank holidays

By the May bank holidays, garden ant colonies that woke up at Easter are well established and the trails into kitchens are at full flow. The Early May bank holiday is one of our highest-volume ant callout days of the year, driven by householders finally having time at home to deal with a trail they have been ignoring for weeks.

Ant treatment over a bank holiday weekend is straightforward. A technician identifies the trail and the entry point, applies residual gel or surface treatment as appropriate, and the colony is eliminated within seven to fourteen days. Single visit, no follow-up needed in most cases.

Why ants suddenly appear in numbers in May

Garden ant colonies build up worker numbers progressively through April and May. A trail that had three or four foragers on it at Easter typically has dozens by the May bank holiday. The trail itself is not new, but the volume crossing into the kitchen has multiplied. By July, the same trail can be running hundreds of ants an hour during peak forage windows.

Same-day May bank holiday coverage

Same-day cover is standard across London, Greater Manchester, Birmingham and the West Midlands, Yorkshire (Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford), the North East (Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham), the South West (Bristol, Bath, Exeter), Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hertfordshire and the rest of the Home Counties. Other parts of mainland UK are typically same-day or next-day at the latest.

Out of hours, our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7 and is answered by a real person. Bank holiday Monday evening callouts are routine.

Frequently Asked Questions: May Bank Holiday Pest Control

Are you open on both May bank holidays?

Yes. Both the Early May bank holiday (first Monday in May) and the Spring bank holiday (last Monday in May) are standard trading days. Phone answered from early morning to late evening. Same-day cover available.

Do you charge a bank holiday surcharge?

No. No bank holiday surcharge, no weekend surcharge, no evening surcharge on standard callouts. The quote on a bank holiday Monday is the same as a normal Monday. Free quote on the phone, every job priced on the visit.

I have a wasp nest in late May. Is it worth treating now, or should I wait?

Treat it now. A late-May nest is small (typically tennis ball sized) with a few dozen workers. By late August the same nest will be far larger, with thousands of workers and a much more aggressive defence response. The treatment is the same single-visit job either way, but the experience of having the nest on the property is dramatically worse if you wait.

I have an ant trail in my kitchen. Can it wait?

It can, but it will get worse. The trail you see at the Early May bank holiday will be running multiple times the volume by July. Single-visit residual treatment will clear the colony within two weeks. Most callers wish they had booked it sooner.

How quickly can you get to me on a May bank holiday?

Same-day across London, Greater Manchester, Birmingham, Yorkshire, the North East, the South West, Essex, Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and the rest of the Home Counties. Wider mainland UK coverage typically same-day or next-day at the latest. Roads are usually quieter on bank holiday Mondays, so we often arrive faster.

I run a pub. Beer garden is rammed for the bank holiday. Can you treat wasps fast?

Yes. Beer garden wasp pressure is one of our most common bank holiday commercial callouts. We can attend mid-service, identify the source (usually a nest within twenty metres of the garden), treat or relocate, and clear the immediate hazard. We work discreetly without disturbing customers wherever possible.

What pests should I expect to see in May?

Wasps, ants and flies are the big three. Wasp queens have finished establishing nests by the Early May bank holiday and worker production is in full swing by the Spring bank holiday. Garden ants are at full activity. Flies, especially bluebottles, are emerging in significant numbers and creating pressure on food businesses.

Are your technicians qualified?

Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG was founded in 2010 with 15 plus years of experience covering bank holiday callouts.
