Solar Panel Bird Proofing

JG Pest Control are specialist installers of solar panel bird proofing across the UK, protecting domestic and commercial rooftop PV arrays from pigeons, gulls and other nesting birds. Across more than a decade of dedicated bird work, our BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed thousands of rooftop arrays nationwide, from single 4kW domestic installations to 250kW plus warehouse roofs on the major distribution corridors. Every system we fit uses non penetrating, warranty preserving hardware and carries a written guarantee.

The last decade of rooftop solar has produced a problem that almost nobody anticipated when the panels first went up. PV panels sit only a few inches above the roof tile, and that narrow gap is, from a feral pigeon’s point of view, close to perfect: warm in winter, dry in rain, shielded from predators and well above human disturbance. Within a single breeding season the cavity beneath an unproofed array can hold a permanent colony, and the consequences (acidic droppings on the panel glass, dry nesting material packed against live DC cabling, biohazard guano in the loft below) are all expensive to put right.

We work to each panel manufacturer’s specification (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) and to each major inverter manufacturer’s tamper conditions (SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy, Sungrow), so neither the panel warranty nor the inverter warranty is put at risk. Common Questions

Why Birds Nest Under Solar Panels

The picture on the right shows the typical gap a solar PV installation creates between the panel underside and the roof tile, usually somewhere between 10 and 15 centimetres. To a feral pigeon, that gap is close to a perfect cavity. It is sheltered from rain and wind, warmed from above by the panel through long summer days, almost completely hidden from predators, and elevated well above ground level where cats and foxes cannot reach. Once a single pair takes up residence and successfully raises a clutch, the rest of the local flock will follow, and within a season you can end up with a long term colony living directly above your roof timbers.

Gulls behave slightly differently. Their bodies are too large for the cavity beneath the panel itself, so they will perch on top instead, foul the surface heavily, and aggressively defend the airspace if their own nests are nearby. This is a particular issue along the south coast and in coastal towns from Brighton round to Bristol and up the south western peninsula, where urban roof nesting gull populations have established themselves over the last twenty years.

Both species are following the same logic that drew our customers to install solar in the first place. The roof has just become valuable real estate.

The Four Real Risks

  • Loss of generation from soiled panels
  • Fire risk from dry nesting material near live DC cabling
  • Voided panel and inverter warranty if you intervene yourself
  • Biohazard from accumulated guano in the loft

For specialist solar panel bird proofing anywhere in the UK, call JG Pest Control on 0330 053 9002 .

Loss of Generation

  • Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and bond to the tempered glass surface within hours.
  • Heavy soiling can knock a panel’s output back by 25 percent or more, and uneven soiling forces the panel into a mismatched state that drags down output from the rest of the string.
  • Cleaning is a job for specialists and droppings often need biohazard handling.

Fire Risk From Nesting Material

  • The cavity beneath a panel runs hot. On a clear summer day the underside of a panel will sit at well over 60 degrees Celsius, and that heat is trapped against the tiles.
  • Pigeon nests are dry sticks, feathers and droppings, packed tight against DC cabling. The London Fire Brigade and several of the larger insurers have publicly flagged solar related roof fires linked to debris build up and pest activity in the cavity.
  • By the time you smell smoke the damage extends well beyond the panels themselves. Proofing the cavity is by far the cheapest insurance you can buy.

What We Install on Your Solar Array

There is no single product that solves every solar bird problem. A coastal Cornwall property with herring gull pressure on the panel tops needs a different specification to a new build estate in Greater Manchester with feral pigeons under the cavity. Our specification is set during the survey, but on a typical UK rooftop the kit includes some combination of the following.

Pigeon Proof Mesh Skirt

A 50mm aperture galvanised steel or 316 stainless steel mesh, supplied in sheet form (not flimsy roll), cut to the linear perimeter of the array and tensioned around all four sides. The mesh prevents any access into the cavity beneath the panels while letting air, rainwater and debris pass through normally. This is the core of every domestic and commercial installation we fit.

Dropper Shaped Stainless Wire Clips

The mesh is held to the underside of the panel frame using purpose made dropper shaped stainless clips, designed specifically for the standard panel frame profile. Nothing is drilled, glued or screwed into the panel frame, which is what preserves the manufacturer warranty. The clip system is rated for the full 25 year design life of the panels themselves.

Wire Posts and Post and Wire Systems

On commercial flat roof installations and on the ridge tiles around an array, we sometimes install low profile stainless wire posts to deter gulls and larger birds from perching above the panels. These are bonded to the substrate with structural adhesive and the wire is tensioned between posts at the heights that match the species we are excluding.

Gull Spikes for Panel Tops and Surrounding Ridge

For coastal properties where gulls are perching directly on the upper panel edge or on the ridge tiles, we install stainless polycarbonate based bird spikes on the surfaces immediately surrounding the array. The spikes do not harm the bird, they simply remove the perching surface.

Optional Biohazard Cleaning and Disinfection

Where there is existing nesting material and accumulated guano, we strip and bag all biological waste for safe disposal, then disinfect the cavity before the mesh goes on. Guano is treated as biohazard waste under the relevant regulations.

Why DIY Solar Bird Proofing Voids Your Warranty

This is the part most homeowners do not realise until it is too late, and it applies in two places: the panels themselves and the inverter behind them. Almost every major panel manufacturer (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) writes their warranty around an undisturbed installation. The moment a third party (and that includes the homeowner with a hosepipe and a broom) lifts a panel, washes the underside, touches the cabling or attempts to remove a nest, the warranty conditions are typically breached.

Solar panels carry two warranties. The product warranty (usually 10 to 12 years on parts) and the performance warranty (usually 25 years, guaranteeing the panel will still produce at least 80 percent of rated output). DIY bird removal is one of the most common ways homeowners inadvertently void both of these at the same time.

The inverter warranty is the second, and equally important, side of the same coin. SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy, Sungrow and the other major inverter brands all specify that only their accredited installers may interfere with the array side wiring or the optimisers. A homeowner pulling a nest out from beneath a panel will almost certainly disturb the MC4 connectors or the optimiser modules clipped to the panel frame, and that single act can void a several thousand pound inverter warranty. Tesla and Enphase in particular have been clear in their UK terms that untrained intervention voids the system level warranty regardless of which component is touched.

A professional bird proofing installation, fitted to the panel manufacturer’s specification using non penetrating clip on hardware, preserves both warranties. We carry the public liability insurance, the working at height qualifications and the certification needed to do the work without putting your warranty at risk. Always tell your installer if you want bird proofing fitted at the same time as the panels themselves, as some installers will incorporate it as part of the original job.

Our Installation Method

  1. Survey. A technician attends the property, inspects the array from ground level and (where safe) on the roof, identifies the species causing the problem, assesses any existing nest activity, and looks for points of entry beneath the panel skirt.
  2. Quote. We give a fixed written quote based on the linear metres of perimeter that need proofing, the access requirements (single storey, two storey, scaffolding, MEWP), and whether any nest removal and biohazard cleaning is needed before the mesh goes on.
  3. Pre installation nest removal. If birds are already in residence we remove the nests (subject to seasonal restrictions under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) and disinfect the cavity. Guano is bagged for safe disposal as biological waste.
  4. Mesh skirting installation. A 50mm galvanised steel or stainless mesh is clipped to the underside of the panel frame using purpose made dropper shaped stainless clips. Crucially, nothing is drilled, glued or penetrated into the panel frame itself, so manufacturer warranties stay intact.
  5. Sign off and guarantee. Photo record of every elevation, written confirmation of warranty preservation, and a written guarantee on the proofing installation.

Domestic Installations

  • Most 4kW to 6kW residential arrays can be proofed in a single visit.
  • Non penetrating clip system preserves panel and inverter warranty.
  • Suitable for tile, slate and concrete roofs.
  • Free quote on the phone, every quote based on array size and access.

Commercial and Warehouse Installations

  • Industrial scale arrays on warehouses, distribution centres, schools and farm buildings present a much larger linear perimeter and a bigger long term liability if left unproofed.
  • Larger arrays mean larger colonies. A 100kW commercial roof can host hundreds of birds within two seasons, with corresponding fire risk and generation loss.
  • We work with facilities managers and solar O&M contractors on planned proofing at the time of commissioning, or remedial proofing on existing arrays.
  • RAMS and MEWP work as standard. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing

How much does solar panel bird proofing cost?

Every quote is based on the array size, the perimeter that needs proofing, and the access requirements. Single storey domestic installations are at the lower end, two storey or commercial arrays with scaffold or MEWP requirements are higher. We provide a free no obligation quote on the phone and a fixed written price after the survey. Call us on 0330 053 9002 for a quote.

Will bird proofing void my solar panel manufacturer warranty?

Not if it is installed correctly. The mesh skirting we fit uses non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling, gluing or modifying the frame itself. This preserves both the product warranty and the performance warranty. DIY removal, on the other hand, almost always voids one or both.

Will it affect my inverter warranty?

No. We do not touch the DC wiring, the MC4 connectors or the optimisers. The mesh clips to the underside of the panel frame only. This matters because SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties are typically voided by any untrained intervention on the array side of the system, and a homeowner pulling out a nest will almost certainly disturb those components.

Is the proofing humane?

Yes. Mesh skirting is an exclusion method, not a trapping or killing method. Birds are physically prevented from entering the cavity beneath the panels but are not harmed. This complies fully with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and is the method recommended by the RSPCA and the RSPB.

What if there are already nests under my panels?

We remove existing nests and disinfect the cavity before fitting the mesh. Nest removal is subject to seasonal restrictions under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, so depending on the species and the time of year we may need to wait until the breeding season ends before active nests can be removed. We will explain the timing on the survey visit.

Do I need scaffolding?

It depends on the property. Single storey installations and most two storey domestic roofs can be done from a MEWP (mobile elevating work platform), which is included in our quote. Commercial or larger industrial installations may require scaffold, which is also included in the quote. There are no hidden access charges.

How long does the installation take?

A typical domestic 4kW to 6kW array can be proofed in a single visit of three to five hours. Commercial arrays scale accordingly. If there is existing nesting material and biohazard cleaning to do, we usually allow an additional half day.

How long does the proofing last?

The galvanised and 316 stainless steel mesh we use is rated for at least 25 years of outdoor exposure, which matches the design life of the panels themselves. The proofing carries a written guarantee.

What species do you proof against?

Most domestic solar bird proofing in the UK is against feral pigeons, which are the species that most readily occupies the cavity under a panel. In coastal and southern coastal areas (Hampshire, Dorset, West Sussex, the south west) we also deal with herring gulls and lesser black backed gulls, which tend to perch on top and foul the panel surface rather than nest underneath. We also occasionally proof against starlings, jackdaws and house sparrows.

Do you cover commercial and industrial arrays?

Yes. We work with facilities managers, solar installers and O&M contractors across the UK on industrial scale rooftop PV, from large warehouse roofs to school estates and farm buildings. RAMS, CHAS and SafeContractor as standard.

Can I get bird proofing fitted at the same time as my panels?

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Speak to your solar installer about including bird proofing in the original installation, or contact us directly and we can coordinate with your installer to fit the proofing at the same access visit. This avoids paying twice for scaffold or MEWP.
