Fleas

Fleas are one of the most common indoor pests in UK homes with cats or dogs, and they remain a problem in properties where pets have moved out, where wildlife has nested in voids, or where a previous tenant left an infestation behind. JG Pest Control treat fleas across the whole of the UK, with same-day cover in major cities, 24-hour response across mainland Britain, and every job carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.

This is the JG hub for flea problems in the UK. It covers the species, the life cycle (which is the key to why DIY usually fails), the signs, and what we do to clear them. If you have flea bites or you have moved into a property and started getting bitten on the ankles, call 0330 053 9002 for a free phone diagnosis.

About Fleas in the UK

The vast majority of UK indoor flea infestations are the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), regardless of whether the home has a cat, a dog or no pets at all. Adults are 1.5 to 3.3 mm long, dark brown to black, flattened side-to-side, with the powerful hind legs that make them famous jumpers (up to around 30 cm vertically and 60 cm horizontally).

The flea life cycle has four stages and only the adult is the part most people think about. Adult fleas account for only about 5% of a typical infestation. Eggs (50%), larvae (35%) and pupae (10%) make up the other 95%, mostly hidden in carpets, soft furnishings, pet bedding and the dust at the base of skirting boards. Eggs hatch in 2 to 12 days, larvae develop over 4 to 18 days, and pupae can sit dormant in the cocoon for weeks or even months before emerging in response to vibration, warmth and CO2 (which is why moving into an empty rented property and turning the heating on triggers a sudden flea problem).

UK flea activity is year-round indoors because central heating maintains the warmth and humidity fleas need. Outdoor populations peak in late summer and early autumn.

Flea Quick Facts

  • Cat flea is the main UK indoor species
  • Adults 1.5 to 3.3 mm, brown-black, jump 30 cm vertically
  • Female lays 20 to 50 eggs per day, 600+ in a lifetime
  • Adults are 5% of the population, eggs/larvae/pupae 95%
  • Pupae can lie dormant for weeks waiting for a host
  • Spreads tapeworm, can transmit murine typhus

Why Fleas are a Problem

Flea bites are itchy, often clustered around the ankles and lower legs, and a meaningful minority of people react badly with raised welts that can take days to settle. In sensitised individuals (particularly young children) bites can trigger flea allergy dermatitis with significant skin involvement. Pets that are heavily infested can become anaemic, particularly puppies and kittens, and flea allergy is the single most common cause of veterinary dermatology consultations in the UK.

Disease transmission in the UK is limited but not zero. Cat fleas are the main UK vector for Dipylidium tapeworm (a parasite of cats, dogs and occasionally young children who accidentally swallow a flea), and the cat flea can also carry Bartonella henselae (cat scratch disease) and Rickettsia species (typhus group). The historic plague vector was the oriental rat flea, which is not established in UK populations.

The other problem is psychological and social. An untreated flea infestation makes a property feel uninhabitable, drives away visitors, and in rental property is a frequent source of deposit disputes. For landlords there are duties under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 to maintain property free of significant infestation, and JG provide written treatment reports suitable for managing-agent and environmental health records.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Itchy bites in clusters around ankles and lower legs
  • Pets scratching, grooming or biting more than usual
  • Flea dirt (small dark specks) in pet bedding
  • Live fleas visible in pale carpet or against a white sock
  • Sudden onset of bites on moving into a property
  • Bites that worsen when the heating is on

Professional vs DIY: Why Hoovering and Spot-On Alone Rarely Finish It

The combination of pet spot-on treatment, hot washing of pet bedding and aggressive vacuuming is the right first step, and for low-grade infestations it can be enough. Where it usually fails is in dealing with the dormant pupae and the larvae buried deep in carpet pile and underlay. Pupae are physically protected by their cocoon and largely shrugged off by most consumer sprays. They emerge as adults over the following weeks, which is why DIY treatments often appear to work for a few days and then fail.

Off-the-shelf flea bombs and total-release foggers are particularly poor performers. The active ingredient settles on horizontal surfaces and does not penetrate carpet pile to the depth where the eggs and larvae actually live. Survivors and newly emerged adults from pupae repopulate within 7 to 14 days.

Professional flea treatment is a residual spray applied at a known rate to all soft surfaces (carpets, rugs, soft furnishings, pet bedding areas, base of skirting boards) using an industry-standard formulation that combines an adulticide with an insect growth regulator. The IGR is the part that breaks the breeding cycle by preventing eggs hatching and larvae developing, so newly emerging pupae walk into a treated environment with nowhere to develop. Combined with a sensible vacuuming and washing routine before and after treatment, a single visit clears the vast majority of domestic infestations.

What JG Will Do

  • Identify the species and the likely source
  • Brief on a 24 to 48 hour pre-treatment prep
  • Apply a professional adulticide plus IGR spray
  • Treat pet bedding areas, soft furnishings, carpets
  • Out-house, garden, kennel treatment where needed
  • Heat treatment for severe or sensitive cases
  • Written report and guarantee

Our Flea Treatment Process

  1. Phone diagnosis. A free 5 to 10 minute call to confirm fleas (rather than other biting insects), find out the property layout and pet situation, and book the visit. Most domestic flea jobs are a fixed phone-quoted price.
  2. Pre-treatment prep. We send you a short prep list: deep vacuum carpets and soft furnishings, hot wash pet bedding, lift any items off the floor, and arrange for pets to be at the vet or kennels on treatment day. Concurrent veterinary treatment of the pet is essential and we will remind you.
  3. Treatment visit. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician applies a professional residual spray (adulticide plus insect growth regulator) to all soft surfaces, carpets, the base of skirting boards, pet bedding areas and the entry points to outbuildings or kennels. Typical domestic treatment takes 1 to 2 hours.
  4. Post-treatment routine. Stay off the treated surfaces for 4 hours, then resume normal life. Do not vacuum for at least 14 days (the residual is doing the work and vacuuming up will reduce its effectiveness). New adults will continue to emerge from pupae for 2 to 4 weeks and walk into the treated environment.
  5. Guarantee. Every treatment is fully guaranteed in writing. If activity persists past the expected window we come back at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Fleas

How quickly can you get to me?

Same-day cover is standard across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.

Are you available weekends and bank holidays?

Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Many flea jobs are picked up on a Saturday morning when families spot the bites, and we cover that demand.

Will the treatment harm my pets or children?

The product is safe to people and pets once dry (typically 2 to 4 hours after application). Pets need to be out of the property during treatment and ideally for that drying window. Fish tanks should be covered and air pumps switched off during treatment. We brief you fully and confirm when the property is safe to re-enter.

Do I need to leave the property?

The treated rooms need to be empty for 2 to 4 hours from the time treatment finishes. Most customers go out for the afternoon. Pets stay out for the full drying period.

How much does flea treatment cost?

Most domestic flea jobs are a fixed phone-quoted price for the property. Larger homes, multiple flats and commercial sites are priced after a free survey. Call 0330 053 9002 .

Why do I keep seeing fleas a week after treatment?

Pupae continue to emerge for 2 to 4 weeks after treatment. They are protected from chemicals inside the cocoon, so the only way to deal with them is to let them emerge into the treated environment, where the residual kills them on contact. Do not panic, do not vacuum, do not re-treat. The numbers drop to zero over the following 2 to 3 weeks.

Do I need to treat my pet at the same time?

Yes, this is essential. Without a current veterinary spot-on or oral treatment for your pet, the pet is a walking flea reservoir and the property will reinfest. We will remind you on the booking call, and we will not knowingly treat a property where the pet is untreated.

I have moved into a new property and started getting bitten. What is going on?

This is one of the most common flea calls we take. Pupae left behind by a previous tenant’s pets can sit dormant for weeks or months and emerge in response to your warmth, vibration and CO2. A single treatment usually clears the inherited infestation.

Are your technicians qualified?

Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating fleas across the UK for more than 15 years.
