Cockroaches are the single most serious public health pest a UK property can have indoors. They contaminate food, trigger asthma, spread bacterial infection, and once established in a building they are notoriously difficult to remove. JG Pest Control treat cockroach infestations across the whole of the UK, with same-day cover in major cities, 24-hour response across mainland Britain, and every job carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.
This is the JG hub for cockroach problems in the UK. It covers identification (German vs Oriental, the two species you will almost certainly be dealing with), why DIY almost always fails, the legal duties for landlords and food businesses, and exactly what we do to clear them. If you have seen one, call 0330 053 9002 for a free phone diagnosis.

About Cockroaches in the UK
Two species of cockroach are responsible for almost every UK indoor infestation. The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is small (12 to 15 mm), light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and almost always lives in warm, humid kitchen and bathroom environments inside heated buildings. The Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) is larger (20 to 30 mm), dark brown to black, slower-moving, and prefers cooler, damper sites such as cellars, drains, boiler rooms and basements.
A female German cockroach carries her egg case (ootheca) until just before it hatches, producing 30 to 40 nymphs per case and 5 to 8 cases in her lifetime. With a generation time of 6 to 8 weeks, a single fertilised female can produce 30,000 descendants in a year under ideal conditions. Oriental cockroaches are slower-breeding (generation time 8 to 12 months) but build large persistent populations in suitable cellars and drain systems.
UK cockroach activity is year-round indoors because both species need the warmth and constant food supply that heated buildings provide. They are nocturnal, fast (German cockroaches can run 5 km/h), and can flatten themselves to fit through gaps a few millimetres wide.

Why Cockroaches are a Problem
Cockroaches are a serious health pest, not a cosmetic one. They carry over 30 species of bacteria including Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and E. coli, and have been linked to outbreaks of typhoid, cholera, gastroenteritis and dysentery in environments where food handling overlaps with infestation.
Cockroach allergen is a major and underestimated asthma trigger. The proteins from cockroach faeces, shed cuticles and dead bodies cause sensitisation in children growing up around infestations, and inner-city studies have repeatedly linked cockroach exposure to higher rates of childhood asthma hospitalisation. For asthmatic occupants, a cockroach infestation is a medical issue as much as a hygiene one.
For food businesses, cockroach presence is a Food Standards Agency issue with the potential for an immediate closure notice, formal prosecution, and a permanent dent in the hygiene rating. For HMOs and blocks of flats, persistent cockroach problems fall under the same Housing Act 2004 (HHSRS Category 1 hazard for pest infestation) and Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 framework as other major pests. JG provide written treatment reports suitable for those records.
Cockroaches also damage stored goods (they eat almost anything organic, including paper, cardboard, glue, and the protein in book bindings) and produce a distinctive musty, oily odour in heavy infestations that lingers in fabric and soft furnishings.
Signs of an Infestation
- Live cockroaches at night, scattering when lights come on
- Droppings: pepper-like flecks (German) or 2 mm cylinders (Oriental)
- Egg cases (oothecae): 8 mm brown capsules near appliances
- Shed skins around skirting and behind units
- Greasy smear marks on horizontal surfaces
- Distinctive musty, oily smell in heavier infestations
- Cockroaches inside electrical motor housings (fridge, washer)
Professional vs DIY: Why Cockroach DIY Almost Always Fails
Cockroaches are the most resistance-evolved pest the average homeowner will encounter. German cockroach populations across most UK cities now carry documented resistance to multiple consumer insecticide classes (pyrethroids, carbamates, organophosphates). A shop-bought spray will kill a handful of visible insects, leave the bulk of the population, the eggs and the harbourages entirely untreated, and scatter the survivors deeper into the building.
Sprays also actively make some cockroach jobs worse. Repellent residues can cause German cockroaches to abandon known harbourages and disperse into adjacent flats, turning a one-property job into a building-wide problem. This is one of the most common reasons we are called to multi-occupancy buildings: a well-meaning resident sprayed the kitchen and the population scattered.
Professional treatment is a survey, a species-matched protocol, and confirmed monitoring. For German cockroaches the gold standard is a gel bait protocol applied to harbourage edges, with no broadcast spraying, supported by insect growth regulators to break the breeding cycle. For Oriental cockroaches the focus is on drain treatment, cellar void treatment and exclusion. Both protocols typically run 3 to 6 weeks with sticky monitor traps used to confirm zero activity before sign-off.

Our Cockroach Treatment Process
- Phone diagnosis. A free 5 to 10 minute call to confirm the likely species (kitchen vs cellar is usually a strong clue) and book a survey.
- Survey visit. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician identifies the species under magnification, inspects every harbourage (behind and inside fridges, freezers, dishwashers, ovens, under units, behind splashbacks, in wall voids), and quantifies the infestation with monitor traps.
- Treatment plan. For German cockroaches: a gel bait protocol applied to harbourage edges, paired with an insect growth regulator. For Oriental cockroaches: cellar void treatment, drain treatment and exclusion. Heat treatment is offered for commercial sites needing fast turnaround.
- Treatment visits. A typical domestic German cockroach programme runs 3 visits over 4 to 6 weeks. Oriental cockroach programmes may run longer where there is sustained re-invasion from drains or neighbouring properties.
- Monitoring and sign-off. Sticky monitor traps are placed at the survey and checked at each visit. We do not sign off until trap catch is zero across consecutive visits.
- Guarantee. Every treatment is fully guaranteed in writing. If activity returns within the cover period we come back at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Cockroaches
How quickly can you get to me?
Same-day cover is standard across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.
Are you available weekends and bank holidays?
Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Cockroach jobs in food premises are often weekend-only because that is the only time the kitchen can shut.
Will the treatment harm my pets or children?
Modern gel bait protocols are placed in cracks, crevices and harbourages behind appliances and inside voids. Children and pets simply need to stay clear while bait is being placed and avoid touching the gel points afterwards (we mark them clearly). The active ingredient quantities are very small and far below the threshold for incidental contact.
Do I need to leave the property?
No, for gel bait protocols. For heat treatment of commercial kitchens, the area is closed for the duration of the treatment (typically 6 to 8 hours). For domestic jobs you stay in the property and just stay out of the treated rooms during application.
How much does cockroach treatment cost?
Domestic cockroach programmes are usually a fixed package price for survey, treatment visits and sign-off, agreed up front after the phone diagnosis. Commercial and complex sites are priced after a free survey. Call 0330 053 9002 .
Will spraying make it worse?
It can, with German cockroaches in particular. Repellent sprays trigger dispersal, scattering the population deeper into wall voids and into adjacent flats. This is one of the most common reasons we are called to multi-flat buildings. Professional protocols deliberately avoid broadcast spray on cockroach jobs in favour of gel bait at harbourage edges.
How long until the cockroaches are gone?
Most domestic German cockroach jobs are resolved over 3 visits across 4 to 6 weeks, with first major drop in numbers within the first week of bait placement. Oriental cockroach programmes typically run longer where there is sustained re-invasion from drains or external sources.
I am a landlord. Do you provide reports for environmental health?
Yes. A written treatment report on JG Pest Control letterhead is issued after every job, suitable for environmental health, managing agent and insurance records. Multi-property and account terms are available.
Are your technicians qualified?
Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating cockroaches across the UK for more than 15 years.
