West Sussex carries one of the higher domestic solar adoption rates on the south coast, with dense rooftop PV across Brighton (technically Brighton and Hove but we cover the whole urban belt), Worthing, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton and Chichester. Inland, Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill and the rural Downs villages add another substantial layer of installation. JG Pest Control’s BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed several hundred West Sussex solar arrays across both the coastal gull belt and the inland feral pigeon hotspots, with experience across everything from single domestic 4kW arrays to large commercial installations around Gatwick.
PV panels sit only a few inches above the tile, and that narrow gap is a near perfect cavity from a feral pigeon’s point of view. On the south coast the gull picture adds a second pressure on the panel surface above. Both species treat the panels as valuable real estate for exactly the reasons that drew our customers to install solar in the first place: warm, dry, undisturbed and high above predators.

JG Pest Control covers all of West Sussex for specialist solar panel bird proofing. We work the seafront belt from Brighton through Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, the inland towns of Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, and the rural South Downs villages. Coastal jobs always get marine grade hardware, inland jobs use standard galvanised, with the spec set during the survey. We work to the warranty conditions for SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow so the inverter cover stays intact.
Solar bird proofing on the south coast is a specialist installation. Done correctly, it preserves the manufacturer warranty on your panels, complies with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 around active nests, and lasts the full 25 year design life of the array.

Why West Sussex Solar Arrays Need Proofing
The bird pressure on West Sussex solar arrays divides along the urban coastal belt and the inland and rural areas. The coast, from Brighton round to Chichester Harbour, has substantial established urban roof nesting populations of herring gulls and lesser black backed gulls. Gulls do not generally nest under solar panels (the cavity is too tight) but they perch on top, foul the panel surface heavily, and aggressively defend the airspace if their own nests on neighbouring chimney stacks are challenged. Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham and Bognor Regis all have well established gull colonies.
Inland West Sussex (Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Petworth, Midhurst) is more of a feral pigeon picture. Pigeons exploit the cavity beneath domestic rooftop panels and once a single pair has nested successfully the rest of the local flock will follow. Crawley in particular has a significant feral pigeon population around the town centre and the Gatwick fringe.
Rural West Sussex on the South Downs sees additional jackdaw and starling pressure on barn roof and outbuilding arrays.
If birds are fouling or nesting on your West Sussex solar array, call us on 01243 924 001 or contact us here.
Signs you have a problem:
- Gulls perched on the array regularly
- White streaking down the panels and tiles
- Cooing or scratching from the loft
- Nesting material at the panel edge
- Falling generation readings

What We Install on a West Sussex Solar Array
West Sussex is one of the more split counties in our coverage area. Coastal jobs are gull dominated, inland jobs are pigeon dominated, and the kit list shifts accordingly.
- 50mm mesh skirt on every job. Marine grade 316 stainless on the seafront belt from Brighton round to Chichester Harbour, standard galvanised on the inland and rural jobs. Supplied in sheet form, cut to perimeter and tensioned around all four sides.
- Dropper shaped stainless wire clips for the mesh, sized for the standard panel frame and fitted without drilling, gluing or screwing anything into the frame itself.
- Stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on the panel upper edges and the ridge tiles for any property on the Brighton to Bognor Regis seafront belt where surface perching is the main issue.
- Wire posts and post and wire systems on commercial flat roof installations around the Gatwick and Crawley industrial belt where the linear perimeter justifies a more substantial deterrent.
- Biohazard cleaning and disinfection on any array with accumulated guano in the cavity, with all material bagged for safe biological waste disposal.
Why DIY Voids Your Warranty
The post 2020 solar surge across West Sussex means a large proportion of local arrays are still well inside both the 10 to 12 year product warranty and the 25 year performance warranty. DIY bird removal is one of the most common ways homeowners lose both. Every major panel manufacturer (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) writes warranty terms that exclude installations touched by an unaccredited third party.
The inverter warranty is the more expensive half of the problem. SolarEdge optimisers, Enphase microinverters, Tesla Powerwall systems, GivEnergy hybrid inverters and Sungrow string inverters all carry similar tamper conditions. A homeowner climbing onto a Worthing or Crawley roof to pull a nest out from beneath a panel will almost certainly disturb the MC4 connectors or the optimisers, voiding a several thousand pound inverter warranty in the process.
Our installation method is non penetrating throughout. The mesh clips to the panel frame underside only. No DC wiring is touched, no optimisers are moved, and both warranties stay intact.
Brighton, Worthing and the Coastal Gull Belt
The continuous urban belt from Brighton and Hove through Shoreham, Lancing, Worthing, Goring and on to Littlehampton and Bognor Regis carries one of the densest roof nesting gull populations in southern England. Any solar array on a property within roughly half a mile of the seafront should expect significant gull pressure on the panel surface. We routinely combine cavity skirting (to keep pigeons out of the gap beneath) with supplementary gull spikes along the panel tops, the ridge tiles and the chimney stacks. Marine grade hardware is essential on any coastal job, and the salt air also means tile fixings need careful selection.
The inland belt (Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, the South Downs villages) is a more straightforward feral pigeon picture, with the occasional jackdaw or starling complication on rural barn arrays.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing in West Sussex
How quickly can you survey my West Sussex property?
We aim to survey within 48 hours across the county. Most of West Sussex is within an hour of our locally based technicians, and same week installation is usually achievable once you have accepted the quote.
What does solar bird proofing cost in West Sussex?
Every quote is based on array size, perimeter, and access. Free quote on the phone, fixed written price after the survey. Call 01243 924 001 .
Will the proofing void my solar panel or inverter warranty?
No. We use non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling, and we do not touch the DC wiring or optimisers. Both panel warranties stay intact, and SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties stay intact too. DIY removal almost always voids one or both.
Do I have a pigeon problem or a gull problem?
If you are on the coast (Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Chichester) it could be either and is often both. Pigeons go under the panels, gulls perch on top. Inland (Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath) it is almost always feral pigeons. Our survey will identify which.
Is the gull problem really worse on the south coast?
Yes, considerably. The Brighton to Bognor Regis seafront belt has one of the largest urban roof nesting gull populations in the south east, and the pressure on coastal solar arrays is significant. We always recommend stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on coastal panel tops in addition to cavity skirting beneath.
Do you do marine grade installations?
Yes. Anywhere within five miles of the West Sussex coast we specify marine grade galvanised or 316 stainless hardware. Lesser specifications fail in salt air, sometimes within two or three years.
What about active nests under or above my panels?
Active nests with eggs or chicks cannot be removed during the breeding season under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. We will recommend a deterrent strategy for the immediate term and schedule the full proofing for after the breeding season ends.
Do you cover commercial solar arrays in West Sussex?
Yes. Commercial PV around the Crawley and Gatwick industrial belt, hotel and hospitality installations on the coast, school and academy installations across the county. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited with RAMS as standard.
What qualifications do your technicians hold?
All our installation technicians hold BPCA Level 2 in Pest Management plus IPAF or PASMA for work at height. We carry full public liability insurance.
