Feral pigeons are the most-encountered urban bird pest in the UK. They foul roofs, balconies and shop fronts, block gutters with nesting material, damage brick and stone with their acidic droppings, and carry zoonotic disease into homes, food premises and warehouses. JG Pest Control deliver pigeon proofing and bird control across the whole of the UK, every job carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.

This is the JG hub for pigeon problems in the UK. It covers identification, behaviour, the legal framework around bird control, the proofing systems we use (netting, spikes, post and wire, electric track, gel), and why we never reach for a quick lethal fix when proofing will solve the problem permanently. About Feral Pigeons in the UK

The feral pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is a descendant of the rock dove, domesticated for centuries and now established as the dominant urban bird across UK cities. Adults are 32 to 37 cm long, weigh 250 to 400 g, and show a wide range of plumage from the classic blue-grey “rock dove” pattern through chequered, red and almost-white variants.

Pigeons are highly site-faithful, breeding year-round wherever they have a sheltered ledge, building 1 to 6 broods of 2 chicks a year. A breeding pair occupying a ledge will continue to use it for years and will rebuild within days if a nest is removed without proofing the location. UK city pigeon populations are large (London alone is estimated at 1 to 5 million birds) and self-sustaining without active management.

UK feral pigeon activity is year-round, with peak roosting and fouling pressure in autumn and winter when wild food sources dwindle and birds concentrate on building ledges, station canopies, signage and shop fronts.

Pigeon Quick Facts

  • 32 to 37 cm long, blue-grey to chequered plumage
  • Highly site-faithful: rebuilds where nest is removed
  • Breeds year-round, up to 6 broods of 2
  • Carries Chlamydia psittaci, Salmonella, E. coli
  • Droppings are acidic and damage stone, paint, metal
  • Protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

Why Pigeons are a Problem

Pigeons are not just a nuisance. They are a recognised public health, structural and legal issue.

On the health side, pigeon droppings carry over 60 known pathogens, with the practical UK list including Chlamydia psittaci (ornithosis, a respiratory infection), Salmonella, E. coli, Cryptococcus neoformans (yeast pathogenic in immunocompromised people) and Histoplasma capsulatum (a fungus that grows on accumulated droppings). Dried droppings can become aerosolised, which is why dropping clean-up requires PPE and why food businesses, hospitals and schools need pigeon management programmes.

On the structural side, pigeon droppings have a pH around 4 to 5 and contain uric acid that aggressively attacks limestone, sandstone, painted metalwork and vehicle paint. Heavy nesting fouls solar panel arrays (a major and growing call type for JG), blocks gutters and downpipes (causing damp ingress), and damages flat roofing membranes.

On the legal side, all wild birds in the UK are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Lethal control of feral pigeons is only permissible under specific General Licence conditions (preserving public health and safety, preventing serious damage), and even then only as a last resort after non-lethal options have been considered. JG operate strictly within the General Licence framework and proofing is always our first and recommended option.

Signs of a Pigeon Problem

  • Droppings accumulating on ledges, canopies, signage
  • Pigeons roosting on parapets, soffit boxes and chimney stacks
  • Nesting material in gutters and behind signage
  • Solar panel array filling with droppings and feathers
  • Damaged or fouled stone, paint or metal
  • Persistent cooing from a loft or void
  • Mites or insect bites associated with disused pigeon nests

Professional vs DIY: Why Proofing Is the Only Permanent Answer

DIY pigeon deterrents (plastic owls, foil strips, supermarket spike strips) work for a few days then stop. Pigeons are intelligent, habituate quickly to fixed visual deterrents, and routinely build nests around or on top of poorly-installed spike. Worse, badly-installed spike or netting can entangle birds, which is a Wildlife Act offence and a welfare problem that no one wants on their building.

Effective pigeon control is a proofing job. The right system depends on the site:

Stainless steel spike, properly graded for the species, is the right answer for most parapets, ledges and signage. JG use industry-standard spike at the correct width and density, fixed with marine-grade adhesive or stainless screws as appropriate.

Post and wire systems work well for long horizontal runs (parapets, gutter lines, signage tops) and are visually almost invisible from street level. They tension a fine stainless wire just above the landing surface, which prevents the bird settling without entanglement risk.

Bird netting (15 mm mesh for pigeons, smaller for sparrows) is the right answer for large recessed areas, atria, loading bays, balconies and the underside of canopies. JG install only knotted polyethylene netting on stainless cabling, with a written 10-year guarantee on the fabric.

Solar panel proofing combines spike around the array perimeter with mesh skirting under the panels, sealing off the nesting void without affecting performance.

Electric track and avian deterrent gel are used on sensitive architectural features and listed buildings where physical proofing would be intrusive.

Our Pigeon Control Process

  1. Phone call. A free 5 to 10 minute call to understand the building, the access requirements, and book a free site survey.
  2. Site survey. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician (with relevant working at height qualifications) attends the site, identifies all roosting and nesting locations, recommends the right proofing system for each, and provides a written quote.
  3. Pre-installation clearance. Where there is accumulated guano, a controlled clean-down using PPE, biocide and disposal under waste-handling regulations precedes the proofing install.
  4. Installation. Proofing is installed using tower scaffolding, MEWP or rope access as the site dictates, with all work to current Working at Height Regulations.
  5. Sign-off. Written proofing certificate, photo record of the install, and a long-term guarantee on the fabric (netting carries a 10-year guarantee, spike and wire carry a 5-year guarantee on materials).
  6. Ongoing maintenance. Annual inspection contracts are available for large estates and commercial portfolios.

Frequently Asked Questions: Pigeons

How quickly can you survey my building?

Free site surveys are usually booked within a week of the call, faster for urgent issues. Installation lead time depends on the system, the scaffold or access requirements, and the proofing materials, and is confirmed at the survey. For domestic solar panels, install often follows within 7 to 14 days of survey. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.

Are you available weekends and bank holidays?

Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Major commercial installs are often booked for weekends to avoid disrupting tenants and traffic.

Is it legal to deter or kill pigeons?

All wild birds in the UK are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Non-lethal deterrence by proofing is fully legal and is JG’s standard approach. Lethal control is only permissible under specific General Licence conditions, as a last resort, after non-lethal alternatives have been considered. JG operate strictly within that framework and would only consider lethal control on a site where proofing has been tried and shown to be unsuitable.

Will the proofing harm the birds?

No. Properly specified and properly installed proofing is designed to prevent landing without injury. Spike of the correct grade, post-and-wire at the correct tension, and properly tensioned 15 mm mesh netting all stop pigeons settling without entangling them. Badly-installed DIY systems are a different story, which is why we recommend professional installation.

Do I need to leave the property?

No. Pigeon proofing is an external job. You stay in the property as normal.

How much does pigeon proofing cost?

Proofing is priced after the free site survey because the system, the linear or square metres of cover, and the access method all change the price. For domestic solar arrays we can give an indicative price over the phone. Call 0330 053 9002 .

Will the pigeons just move to another building?

Established birds will try the adjacent building or a different part of the same building. This is why a survey at the start matters: we proof every viable roosting location on the property, not just the most obvious one, so the birds cannot simply relocate ten metres away.

What about the existing droppings?

JG remove accumulated guano under controlled conditions before installing proofing, using PPE, biocide and registered waste disposal. This is included in the quote where applicable.

Are your technicians qualified?

Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician with the relevant working at height qualifications (PASMA, IPAF, IRATA as appropriate to the access method). JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been delivering bird proofing across the UK for more than 15 years.
