Mice are the single most common indoor mammal pest in the UK. They breed faster than rats, slip through gaps the width of a biro, and a single pair indoors can produce 60 to 100 descendants in a year. JG Pest Control treat mouse infestations across the whole of the UK, with same-day cover in major cities, 24-hour response across mainland Britain, and every job carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.
This is the JG hub for mice in UK properties. It covers identification, behaviour, the signs you should not ignore, why DIY rarely finishes the job, and exactly what we do to clear an infestation and stop the next one coming in. If you have heard scratching at night or seen droppings, call 0330 053 9002 for a free phone diagnosis.

About Mice in the UK
The house mouse (Mus musculus) is the species behind almost every UK indoor mouse infestation. Adults are 7 to 10 cm in body, with a tail of similar length, weighing 12 to 30 g. Coats are grey-brown above, paler below, with large ears and small black eyes. Field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and yellow-necked mice are bigger, more colourful, and turn up indoors mainly in rural properties in autumn.
A female house mouse is sexually mature at 6 weeks and produces 5 to 10 litters of 5 to 8 pups per year. The lifespan in a domestic setting is around 9 to 12 months, but the breeding rate means a small problem becomes a serious one very quickly. Mice are nocturnal, range only about 3 to 5 metres from the nest, and need very little food (a few crumbs a day) but constant access to it.
UK mouse activity is year-round indoors, with a strong autumn peak (October to January) as outdoor mice move into heated buildings. A house mouse can squeeze through a 6 to 7 mm gap, which is why mouse proofing is significantly more demanding than rat proofing.

Why Mice are a Problem
Mice are smaller than rats but they are not less of a problem. The damage and health risks come from sheer numbers, the speed they breed, and the trail of urine and droppings they leave wherever they go.
On the property side, mice gnaw constantly. UK insurance claim data links mice to chewed electrical cabling (and resulting fires), gnawed water and gas pipework, damaged loft insulation, fouled stored food and contaminated kitchen surfaces. A small colony in a wall cavity can produce thousands of droppings a month, each one a vector for the pathogens they carry.
On the health side, house mice are reservoirs for Salmonella, Hantavirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), Leptospira and a range of other infections. Transmission is mainly through urine and dropping contamination of food preparation surfaces. For any food business this is a Food Standards Agency issue and a direct route to a hygiene rating downgrade. For asthma sufferers, mouse allergen is a recognised indoor trigger.
Landlords have duties under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 and the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018: let property must be free of significant pest infestations. Persistent mouse problems in let property increasingly trigger environmental health attention. JG provide written treatment reports suitable for those records.
Signs of an Infestation
- Droppings (3 to 6 mm, dark, pointed)
- Scratching, scurrying or squeaking at night
- Gnaw marks on food packaging, door bottoms, cable
- Smear marks along regular runs
- Strong stale urine smell in cupboards and lofts
- Nests of shredded paper, fabric or insulation
- Pet behaviour change (cats and dogs fixated on one spot)
Professional vs DIY: Why Snap Traps Alone Rarely Work
Snap traps and ultrasonic deterrents are a hopeful first move that rarely finishes the job. Snap traps catch one mouse at a time, and a population of 10 or 12 will outpace a single homeowner setting two or three traps. Ultrasonic deterrents have repeatedly failed independent testing. Shop-bought bait blocks are limited in strength and easy to misuse, with a real risk of poisoning a cat or a fox.
Mice are also wary of new objects. The 2 or 3 days where they avoid a freshly-placed trap is exactly when the breeding cycle pushes the population higher. By the time a homeowner has caught 4 or 5 mice with the DIY approach, the colony has often replaced them.
Professional treatment is a survey, a treatment, and a proofing job. We find the runs, the harbourages and the entry points, apply legal rodenticide in tamper-resistant bait stations or use trapping where bait is not appropriate, monitor consumption, and seal entry routes so the next batch does not move in. For commercial premises and food businesses, a documented monitoring contract is the only way to satisfy auditors.

Our Mouse Treatment Process
- Phone diagnosis. A free 5 to 10 minute call to confirm the likely problem and book a survey. For most domestic mouse jobs we can give an indicative price over the phone.
- Survey visit. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician inspects every room and storage void inside the property, then walks the exterior to find entry routes (gaps around service pipes, missing airbrick mesh, gnawed weep vents, gaps under doors).
- Treatment plan. A mix of trapping and CRRU-stewardship-compliant rodenticide in tamper-resistant stations, matched to the property and to any pets, children or wildlife considerations.
- Treatment visits. Domestic mouse jobs typically run 3 visits over 4 to 6 weeks: install, mid-point check, sign-off. We do not sign off until consumption and activity have stopped.
- Proofing. Mouse proofing is detailed work because mice get through gaps a rat could not. We quote and carry out proofing (metal mesh, steel wool, mortar repair, brush strips) to industry standards.
- Guarantee. Every treatment is fully guaranteed in writing. If activity returns within the cover period we come back at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Mice
How quickly can you get to me?
Same-day cover is standard across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.
Are you available weekends and bank holidays?
Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Mice in the kitchen do not wait for Monday morning.
Will the mouse treatment harm my pets or wildlife?
Professionally applied rodenticide is placed in lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations inaccessible to pets, children and non-target wildlife. We follow the UK Rodenticide Stewardship Regime, which exists specifically to minimise non-target exposure. Where pets or sensitive wildlife are higher risk, we use trapping rather than bait.
Do I need to leave the property?
No. Mouse treatments do not require you to vacate. Bait stations and traps are placed in lofts, voids, cupboards and behind appliances, where you would not normally go.
How much does mouse treatment cost?
Domestic mouse treatments are usually a fixed package price for survey, treatment visits and sign-off, agreed up front after the phone diagnosis. Commercial and complex sites are priced after a free survey. Call 0330 053 9002 .
How are mice getting in? My house feels sealed.
A house mouse can squeeze through a 6 to 7 mm gap (about the width of a biro). The most common entry routes we find are gaps where service pipes pass through external walls, missing or damaged airbrick mesh, gnawed weep vents, gaps under garage and patio doors, and damaged eaves and bargeboards. The survey identifies them all.
How long until the mice are gone?
Most domestic mouse jobs are resolved over 3 visits across 4 to 6 weeks. Larger or more entrenched infestations take longer. We do not sign off until consumption has stopped and there is zero new activity.
I am a landlord. Do you provide reports for environmental health?
Yes. A written treatment report on JG Pest Control letterhead is issued after every job, suitable for environmental health, managing agent and insurance records. Multi-property and account terms are available.
Are your technicians qualified?
Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating mice across the UK for more than 15 years.
