Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are the most stubborn, fastest-spreading insect pest most UK households will ever encounter. JG Pest Control treat them every single day, across the whole of the UK, with same-day eradication available in major cities and a 24-hour response across the rest of mainland Britain. Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.

This page is the JG guide to bed bugs in the UK: what they are, how they behave, how to spot an infestation, why they are so hard to clear yourself, and exactly what we do to wipe them out. If you already know you have them and you want to skip the reading, call 0330 053 9002 and we will get a technician to you, often same day.

About Bed Bugs

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is a small, reddish-brown insect, roughly the size and shape of an apple pip when fully grown (4 to 5 mm long, 1.5 to 3 mm wide). Adults are flat and oval before feeding, then swell into a darker, more elongated shape once they have taken a blood meal.

Bed bugs are nocturnal, hide during the day in cracks, seams and crevices within 1.5 metres of where people sleep, and emerge at night to feed on exposed skin. A single female lays between 200 and 500 eggs in her lifetime, in batches of 1 to 5 per day. Eggs hatch in 6 to 10 days. From egg to breeding adult takes around 5 weeks at room temperature, which is why infestations escalate so quickly once established.

UK bed bug activity is year-round indoors because central heating keeps homes within the bugs’ preferred 20 to 30C range. Peak call-out months are May to October, driven by hotel stays, second-hand furniture, and increased travel, but JG treat bed bug jobs every week of the year.

Bed Bug Quick Facts

  • Adults are 4 to 5 mm, reddish-brown
  • Feed at night, hide during the day
  • Live 4 to 6 months, can survive a year without food
  • Eggs are largely resistant to off-the-shelf sprays
  • Travel home in luggage, bags, second-hand furniture
  • Do not transmit disease, but bites and sleep loss are serious

Why Bed Bugs are a Problem

Bed bugs do not spread disease in the UK, but the health impact of an active infestation is significant and consistently underestimated. The bites themselves are usually small, itchy welts in clusters or rough lines, often on arms, neck, back and legs. A minority of people react more severely with raised, swollen patches that can take weeks to fade.

The bigger issue is sleep. People with active infestations routinely report waking through the night, anxiety at bedtime, and a level of exhaustion that affects work, relationships and mental health within a fortnight. Untreated infestations also damage soft furnishings, leave staining on mattresses and bedding, and in rental properties trigger formal complaints, deposit disputes and, in the worst cases, court action.

For landlords there is also a legal duty. Under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 and the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018, a property must be fit for human habitation. A persistent bed bug infestation in a let property is increasingly treated by environmental health teams as a fitness issue, with formal notices and enforcement available. JG provide written treatment reports suitable for landlord and managing-agent records.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Small itchy bites in clusters or lines
  • Tiny dark spots (digested blood) on sheets and mattress seams
  • Pale yellow shed skins around the bed frame
  • Live bugs or pinhead-sized white eggs in seams and joints
  • A faint, sweet, musty odour in heavy infestations
  • Spots of fresh blood on bedding after scratching at night

Professional vs DIY: Why Off-the-Shelf Treatments Usually Fail

Bed bugs have developed widespread resistance to the pyrethroid insecticides used in most consumer sprays and powders. A typical DIY response (one or two cans of supermarket spray, perhaps a steam attempt) will usually knock down a handful of visible adults and leave the eggs and the protected core of the harbourage entirely untouched. Two weeks later, with the next round of eggs hatched, the infestation is back and often worse, because the survivors have scattered to new harbourages.

Professional treatment is built around three things that DIY cannot replicate: a thorough survey to find every harbourage, a treatment strategy that destroys eggs as well as adults, and a follow-up to confirm zero activity. The two methods JG use are full-room heat treatment, which raises the entire room above the lethal threshold and kills every stage in a single visit, and a targeted residual insecticide protocol applied across multiple visits where heat is not appropriate.

What JG Will Do

  • Full property survey to map every harbourage
  • Same-day heat treatment where suitable
  • Multi-visit chemical protocol where it is not
  • Written report for landlords and agents
  • Sniffer dog verification on request
  • Discreet, unmarked vans on bed bug jobs
  • Guarantee in writing

Our Bed Bug Treatment Process

  1. Phone diagnosis. The first call is free and usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. We ask about bites, what you have seen, sleep patterns and recent travel. In most cases we can confirm whether bed bugs are the likely cause before sending anyone out.
  2. Survey visit. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician inspects every potential harbourage: mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboards, skirting boards, behind picture frames, inside electrical sockets and within nearby soft furnishings. Sniffer dog verification is available where the infestation is hard to locate.
  3. Treatment recommendation. Two main options: full-room heat treatment for the quickest, single-visit eradication, or a multi-visit residual chemical protocol where heat is not suitable. The choice depends on property, contents, budget and how soon the room is needed back in use. You get a fixed quote before any work starts.
  4. Treatment. Heat treatments typically run 6 to 8 hours for a 3 to 5 bedroom home, single-room treatments are shorter. Chemical protocols are normally two to three visits at 10 to 14 day intervals, with a final check at week 6.
  5. Follow-up and guarantee. Every treatment is fully guaranteed in writing. If any activity is found within the cover period (typically up to 3 months on heat, longer on residual protocols) we return at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Bed Bugs

How quickly can you get to me?

Same-day cover is standard across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.

Are you available weekends and bank holidays?

Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday (except Christmas Day), and the phone line is staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Bed bug infestations do not respect calendars, and neither do we.

Will treatment harm my pets or children?

No. Heat treatments use no chemicals at all in most cases, and the room is fully cooled before reoccupation. Where a residual chemical protocol is used, all products are professional-grade, applied to harbourages rather than open surfaces, and dry to a safe state within a few hours. We brief you on a short pre-treatment checklist and confirm when the area is safe to re-enter.

Do I need to leave the property?

For full-room heat treatment, yes, for the duration of the treatment (typically 6 to 8 hours). For chemical protocols, you usually only need to vacate the treated rooms for 2 to 4 hours per visit. Pets, fish tanks and similar are covered in the pre-treatment brief.

How much does bed bug treatment cost?

Every job is priced on visit because property size, the spread of the infestation and treatment method all change the price. We give a free, no-obligation quote over the phone first and a fixed price is locked in before any work starts. Call 0330 053 9002 .

Can heat treatment kill bed bug eggs?

Yes, and this is the main reason heat is more reliable than chemical-only treatment. Bed bug eggs are largely resistant to off-the-shelf sprays but cannot survive the kill temperature reached during a professional heat treatment. Every life stage from egg to adult is destroyed in a single visit.

I think I picked them up at a hotel. What do I do now?

Do not unpack inside the main bedroom. Place suitcases in the bath or on a hard floor, bag clothing into sealed sacks, and run washable items through a 60C wash and hot tumble dry. Then call us for advice. Catching it early, before the bugs spread to bedroom furniture, is the single biggest factor in keeping the treatment short and cheap.

I am a landlord. What do you provide for my records?

A written treatment report on JG Pest Control letterhead, suitable for managing-agent, environmental health and insurance records, is issued after every job. Multi-property contracts and account terms are available.

Are your technicians qualified?

Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating bed bugs across the UK for more than 15 years.
