Ants

Ants are the most common nuisance insect JG Pest Control are called to in the UK. Most cases are the familiar black garden ant trailing across a kitchen worktop, but pharaoh ants in flats and hospitals, and the occasional Argentine or carpenter ant, all turn up in the JG diary every year. Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.

This page is the JG hub for ant problems in the UK: how to identify the species in front of you, why they are inside, what works against them, and what we do when DIY has run its course. If you already know what you have and you want it gone, call 0330 053 9002 for a free phone quote.

About Ants in the UK

The UK has around 60 ant species but only a handful regularly cause indoor problems. The vast majority of calls JG take are about the common black garden ant (Lasius niger), a 3 to 5 mm dark brown to black ant that nests outdoors and forages indoors for sweet food. Workers live a few months, queens up to 15 years, and a single mature nest can hold 5,000 to 15,000 ants.

Pharaoh ants (Monomorium pharaonis) are the other big one. Tiny (1.5 to 2 mm), pale yellow to amber, and unable to survive a UK winter outdoors, they live exclusively inside heated buildings and are a particular problem in hospitals, care homes, blocks of flats and commercial kitchens. They spread infection because they trail through drains and waste, and they split into multiple new nests if treated with standard sprays, which is why professional bait protocols are essential.

UK ant season runs roughly April to October outdoors, with the famous “flying ant day” mating swarms in late July or early August. Indoor activity continues year-round, particularly with pharaoh ants and with garden ants nesting under heated floors and patios.

Common UK Indoor Ants

  • Black garden ant (3 to 5 mm, sweet-seeking)
  • Pharaoh ant (1.5 to 2 mm, pale yellow)
  • Ghost ant (rare, tropical, in heated buildings)
  • Roger’s ant (small, found in glasshouses and warehouses)
  • Flying ants on mating swarms in late July/August

Why Ants are a Problem

Ants do not bite or sting in any serious way (the UK does not have any genuinely dangerous native ant species), but they cause two real problems that justify a professional response.

The first is contamination. Ants trail freely from outdoor nesting sites, through soil, gutters and drains, into kitchens, larders, fridges and exposed food. Pharaoh ants in particular trail through drains and waste areas in healthcare and food premises, and have been linked to the mechanical spread of Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas. For any food business, an ant trail in the prep area is an immediate compliance issue.

The second is the size and persistence of the colony. A typical garden ant nest under a patio, beside a foundation or under a heated floor will keep sending workers in for years. Off-the-shelf sprays kill the workers you can see but never touch the queen and brood, so the trail rebuilds within days. Pharaoh ant colonies actively split (bud) when stressed by spray treatments, turning one problem into several.

For landlords and managing agents, persistent ant infestations in flats fall under the same Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 expectations as other pests, particularly where pharaoh ants are involved. JG provide written treatment reports suitable for those records.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Trails of ants between food and a single entry point
  • Small piles of fine soil or sand by skirting boards, vents or paving cracks
  • Winged ants indoors (a sign the nest is mature)
  • Wood shavings near skirting (carpenter ants, rare)
  • Tiny pale ants in bathrooms or kitchens (pharaoh)
  • Repeat infestations after DIY sprays

Professional vs DIY: Why Sprays Often Make Ants Worse

Off-the-shelf ant sprays and powders are contact insecticides. They kill the workers they touch, which makes the trail disappear for 2 to 7 days while the colony sends out new foragers. The queen, the brood and the bulk of the worker population were never in the firing line, and the colony rebuilds.

Worse, with pharaoh ants and a few other species, repeated spraying triggers budding. The colony splits, the queens scatter to new sites within the building, and a manageable infestation in one flat becomes a building-wide problem. This is why responsible pest control on pharaoh ants is strictly bait-only, with sprays explicitly avoided.

Professional treatment uses slow-acting baits that the workers carry back to the nest, feed to the queen and the brood, and destroy the colony from the inside. Bait formulations are matched to the species (sugar-based for garden ants, protein for pharaohs) and to the season. Heat treatment is also effective against ants in small, contained areas where bait is not practical, such as commercial kitchens that need a fast turnaround.

What JG Will Do

  • Identify the species (garden, pharaoh or other)
  • Locate trails and probable nest sites
  • Apply species-matched bait protocol
  • Treat external nest sites where accessible
  • Follow-up to confirm colony collapse
  • Written report for landlords and food businesses
  • Guarantee in writing

Our Ant Treatment Process

  1. Phone diagnosis. A free 5 to 10 minute call to identify the likely species, the scale of the problem and the right treatment route. For most domestic garden ant trails we can give a fixed price over the phone.
  2. Survey visit. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician inspects the building inside and out, identifies the species under magnification where needed, follows trails back to probable nest sites and confirms the treatment plan.
  3. Treatment. A targeted gel or granular bait protocol matched to the species. For garden ants this usually means a single internal bait application plus treatment of the external nest. For pharaoh ants it means a strict bait-only programme over multiple visits, with no sprays, to avoid budding.
  4. Follow-up. Most ant jobs need one return visit to confirm the colony has collapsed. Pharaoh ant programmes typically run for 4 to 8 weeks. Every job is signed off only when there is zero activity.
  5. Guarantee. Every treatment is fully guaranteed in writing. If activity returns within the cover period we come back at no additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ants

How quickly can you get to me?

Same-day cover is standard across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.

Are you available weekends and bank holidays?

Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Bank holidays are often when ant problems are spotted, and we keep cover open for that exact reason.

Will the treatment harm my pets or children?

No. Modern ant baits are placed in protected gel points and bait stations behind kickboards, under appliances and along skirtings. They are formulated for ant biology and used at quantities that are not dangerous to people or pets. We confirm placements before we leave and brief you on what to avoid.

Do I need to leave the property?

No. Ant baits and targeted treatments do not require you to vacate. Children and pets simply need to stay away from the bait points while we are placing them, after which normal life continues.

How much does ant treatment cost?

Most domestic garden ant jobs are a fixed phone-quoted price. Pharaoh ant programmes and commercial premises are priced after a free survey. Call 0330 053 9002 for a free quote.

Why has DIY spray stopped working after a few days?

Sprays kill the foragers you see but never reach the queen or brood, so the colony rebuilds within days. With pharaoh ants, spraying actively makes things worse by triggering colony splitting (budding). Professional baits are designed to be carried back into the nest and destroy the colony at source.

How long until the ants are gone?

Garden ant trails typically stop within 3 to 7 days of bait placement, with full colony collapse over 2 to 3 weeks. Pharaoh ant programmes usually run 4 to 8 weeks to clear a building. We do not sign a job off until activity has stopped.

Will you treat outside as well as inside?

Yes. Where the nest is accessible (under patio slabs, beside foundations, in grass edges) we treat it directly. This is usually the fastest route to long-term control for garden ant problems on a single property.

Are your technicians qualified?

Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating ants across the UK for more than 15 years.
