Hampshire has one of the highest concentrations of domestic rooftop solar in southern England. The Solent corridor from Southampton round to Portsmouth, the new builds across Whiteley, Hedge End and Locks Heath, and the rural estates around Winchester and the South Downs fringe all carry a heavy density of 4kW to 6kW domestic arrays installed during the post 2020 surge. Across more than a decade of pest control work in the county, our BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed hundreds of Hampshire solar installations, from single family homes on the Whiteley estates to large commercial roofs along the M27.
The underlying problem is the same one that has emerged on every UK solar rollout. PV panels sit only a few inches above the roof tile, and to a feral pigeon that narrow gap is close to a perfect cavity. The bird pressure that comes with it, mostly feral pigeons in the urban belt and an increasing herring gull presence along the coast, has turned solar panel bird proofing into one of our fastest growing service categories in Hampshire.

JG Pest Control covers all of Hampshire for specialist solar panel bird proofing, from single domestic arrays in Eastleigh, Fareham and Andover to commercial and warehouse installations across the M27 industrial belt. Our locally based technicians know the difference a coastal location makes (gulls behave differently from inland pigeons, and the Solent salt air shortens the life of unsuitable hardware), and we specify the right mesh and clip system for each property.
This is a specialist service. It needs to be done in a way that preserves your panel manufacturer warranty and your inverter warranty (SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy, Sungrow), complies with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 around active nests, and stands up to 25 years of UV and weather. Our installation method does all three.

Why Hampshire Solar Arrays Attract Birds
Two things drive demand for solar panel bird proofing in Hampshire. The first is the sheer density of installation. The county sits in one of the highest irradiance bands in the country (only Cornwall, Devon and parts of Dorset get more sunshine hours), and the combination of large suburban housing stock, generous south facing roof angles and high disposable income has produced one of the densest domestic PV markets in the UK.
The second is the bird population. Feral pigeons are well established across Southampton, Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant and Basingstoke, with strong colonies around the city centre transport hubs and railway viaducts. Herring gulls and lesser black backed gulls dominate the Solent coast, with breeding populations established in Portsmouth and along the Hayling Island foreshore. Both species find rooftop solar arrays attractive, though for different reasons. Pigeons exploit the 10 to 15 centimetre cavity beneath the panels for nesting. Gulls perch on top and foul the surface.
If your solar panels in Hampshire are showing signs of bird activity, call our friendly team on 01256 510012 or contact us here.
Signs you have a problem:
- Visible droppings on or beneath the panels
- Cooing or scratching from the loft below the array
- Feathers in the gutter
- Sudden drop in generation readings
- Sticks and nesting material at the eaves
What We Do on a Hampshire Solar Bird Proofing Job
The job is a four part sequence. First, a survey, usually arranged within 48 hours of your call. Second, a fixed written quote based on the linear perimeter of the array, the access requirements (single storey, two storey with MEWP, scaffold for larger commercial), and whether existing nests need removing first. Third, removal of any existing nests and biohazard cleaning of accumulated guano (subject to seasonal restrictions under the Wildlife and Countryside Act). Fourth, installation of 50mm galvanised mesh skirting using non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that preserve the panel manufacturer warranty.
Every job comes with a written guarantee on the proofing installation and a photo record of every elevation.

What We Install on a Hampshire Solar Array
The specification is set on the survey, but a typical Hampshire job uses some combination of the following.
- 50mm pigeon proof mesh skirt in galvanised steel (inland) or 316 stainless (Solent coastal), supplied in sheet form, cut to the perimeter and tensioned around all four sides of the array.
- Dropper shaped stainless wire clips designed for the standard solar panel frame profile. The clips hold the mesh in place without anything being drilled, glued or screwed into the panel itself, which is what preserves the manufacturer warranty.
- Gull spikes on the ridge tiles and upper panel edges for properties from Lymington round through Portsmouth and out to Hayling Island where surface perching is the main issue.
- Wire posts and post and wire systems on commercial flat roof installations along the M27 corridor where the gull pressure on larger arrays needs more than a simple skirt.
- Biohazard cleaning and disinfection where there is accumulated guano and nesting material in the cavity.
Why DIY Voids Your Warranty
The Hampshire solar market includes a lot of recent installations still well inside both warranty periods, which makes the DIY question particularly important here. Solar panels carry two warranties (a 10 to 12 year product warranty on parts and a 25 year performance warranty on rated output) and the moment a homeowner lifts a panel, brushes the underside or pulls out a nest, the manufacturer can typically void both.
The inverter warranty is the second issue, and it is the more expensive one to lose. SolarEdge optimisers, Enphase microinverters, Tesla Powerwall systems, GivEnergy hybrid inverters and Sungrow string inverters are all specified to be touched only by accredited installers. Disturbing the MC4 connectors or optimisers clipped to the panel frame (which is almost impossible to avoid if you are pulling a nest out yourself) will void a several thousand pound inverter warranty.
Our installation method touches none of the DC wiring, none of the optimisers and none of the panel frame fixings. The mesh clips to the underside of the panel frame only. Both warranties stay intact.
Solent Coastal Considerations
Solar bird proofing along the Solent coast from Lymington round through Southampton, Portsmouth and out to Hayling Island requires a slightly different approach to inland Hampshire. Salt air will rapidly corrode anything that is not properly galvanised or stainless, so we specify marine grade hardware for any installation within roughly five miles of the coastline. Gull pressure is also significantly higher on the coast, and while gulls do not typically nest under the panels themselves, they will perch on top, foul the surface heavily, and aggressively defend their territory if their own nests are nearby on chimney stacks or neighbouring roofs. For coastal properties we often combine panel skirting with additional gull spikes on the panel tops and surrounding ridge tiles.
Inland Hampshire (Winchester, Basingstoke, Andover, Alton, Petersfield) is a more straightforward feral pigeon picture. The cavity skirting is usually sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Hampshire
How quickly can you survey my Hampshire property?
We typically arrange surveys within 48 hours of your call, and most of Hampshire is within an hour’s drive of our locally based technicians. Same week installation is usually achievable once you have accepted the quote.
What does solar bird proofing cost in Hampshire?
Every quote is based on array size, perimeter to be proofed, and access requirements. Single storey domestic installations are at the lower end, two storey suburban properties with MEWP requirements are higher, and commercial or warehouse arrays scale with the linear metres of perimeter. We provide a free quote on the phone and a fixed written price after the survey. Call 01256 510012 .
Will the proofing void my solar panel or inverter warranty?
No. We use non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling, gluing or modifying anything, and we do not touch the DC wiring, MC4 connectors or optimisers. This preserves both the panel product warranty and the performance warranty, and it keeps SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties intact. DIY removal almost always voids one or both.
Do I have a pigeon problem or a gull problem?
If you are inland (Winchester, Basingstoke, Andover, Petersfield) it is almost certainly feral pigeons nesting under the panels. If you are on the coast (Southampton, Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant, Hayling Island, Lymington) it could be either, and is often both. Pigeons go under the panels. Gulls perch on top and foul the surface. Our survey will identify which.
Is there a difference between coastal and inland installations?
Yes. On the Solent coast we specify marine grade hardware because the salt air rapidly corrodes lesser quality fittings, and we often combine panel skirting with gull spikes on the panel tops and ridge tiles because gull pressure is significantly higher. Inland Hampshire is a more straightforward feral pigeon picture.
What about active nests under my panels?
If we find an active nest with eggs or chicks, we cannot legally remove it during the breeding season under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In that case we will recommend a deterrent strategy for the immediate term and schedule the proofing for after the breeding season ends. Our surveyor will explain the timing on site.
Do you cover commercial and warehouse arrays in Hampshire?
Yes. We work on commercial PV across the M27 corridor, the Basingstoke industrial estates, and the warehouse and distribution sector in and around the Solent. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with full RAMS and MEWP work as standard.
What qualifications do your technicians hold?
All our installation technicians hold BPCA Level 2 in Pest Management, plus IPAF or PASMA for work at height. We carry full public liability insurance and provide RAMS for any commercial installation.
