Greater Manchester has one of the fastest growing rooftop solar markets in the north of England, driven largely by the wave of new build housing estates across Salford, Trafford, Bolton, Bury and Wigan where solar PV is now standard specification on most developer plots. Add the substantial industrial and warehouse roof solar across the M60 and M62 corridors, and the older retrofit installations across the leafier suburbs of Stockport, Altrincham, Sale and Didsbury, and the bird pressure on Manchester area solar is now a routine pest control workload. JG Pest Control has been a working presence across the conurbation for more than a decade, and our BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed both individual domestic arrays and multi property estate streets right across the urban belt.

PV panels sit only a few inches above the roof tile, and the 10 to 15 centimetre cavity that creates is, from a feral pigeon’s perspective, close to a perfect nesting site. Manchester is one of the densest pigeon populations in the UK and the birds have been quick to identify the city’s new wave of rooftop solar as ideal real estate. The dominant species is, as you would expect for one of the densest urban areas in the UK, the feral pigeon.

JG Pest Control covers all of Greater Manchester for specialist solar panel bird proofing. We work the city centre, the inner ring (Salford, Stretford, Old Trafford, Gorton, Levenshulme, Longsight), the suburban belt (Stockport, Altrincham, Sale, Wilmslow, Bury, Bolton, Wigan) and the new build estates across Trafford, Salford, Tameside and Oldham. Our locally based technicians can usually reach a Manchester area property within an hour and provide a survey within 48 hours. We work to the warranty conditions for SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow so your inverter cover stays intact.

Solar bird proofing in Manchester is dominated by the feral pigeon. The city’s resident pigeon population is one of the largest in the UK and these birds have been quick to exploit the wave of new domestic rooftop solar across the conurbation. New build estate density means colonies establish fast, and on the larger warehouse and industrial roofs we see colonies that can run into the hundreds of birds within two seasons if left unproofed.

Why Manchester Solar Arrays Need Proofing

The feral pigeon is the dominant species across Greater Manchester and accounts for the overwhelming majority of our solar panel bird proofing callouts. The city’s pigeon population is concentrated around the transport hubs (Piccadilly, Victoria, the major motorway junctions), the older inner ring terraced housing, and the city centre commercial cores. From those urban strongholds, pigeons radiate out into the suburban belt and have been quick to identify domestic solar arrays as ideal nesting cavities.

The new build estates that have come on stream across Trafford, Salford, Tameside, Oldham, Bolton and Wigan since around 2020 are a particular concern. Mandatory or near mandatory rooftop solar on most new plots means a continuous stretch of identical south facing arrays, which is a perfect environment for rapid colony expansion. We routinely visit estates where 30 or 40 of the new houses on a single road all have pigeon activity under the panels within two or three years of completion.

On the industrial and warehouse side, the M60 and M62 corridor distribution sheds carry some of the largest rooftop solar installations in the country, and on those a single nesting season can establish a colony of hundreds of birds with corresponding fire risk and generation loss.

If pigeons are nesting under your Manchester area solar panels, call us on 0161 507 5940 or contact us here.

Signs you have a problem:

  • Visible droppings on or below the panels
  • Cooing or scratching from the loft
  • Feathers in the gutter
  • Pigeons regularly perched on the array
  • Generation reading drop

Our Greater Manchester Solar Bird Proofing Service

A four stage process. Survey within 48 hours of your call. What We Install on a Greater Manchester Solar Array

Manchester is pigeon country, and the kit list is built around exclusion of the cavity beneath the panels rather than surface deterrence. A typical Greater Manchester job uses the following.

  • 50mm galvanised steel mesh skirt at the panel cavity, supplied in sheet form (not flimsy rolls), cut to the perimeter and tensioned around all four sides of the array. This is the core of every domestic, new build estate and commercial installation we fit in the conurbation.
  • Dropper shaped stainless wire clips sized for the standard panel frame profile. Nothing drilled, glued or screwed into the panel frame, which is what preserves the manufacturer warranty.
  • Wire posts and post and wire systems on the larger warehouse and distribution roof installations along the M60 and M62 corridors, where the perimeter is hundreds of metres long and the standard mesh skirt is supplemented by perimeter wire.
  • Stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on the increasing number of city centre commercial roofs where urban gulls (now established across Manchester) are perching on panel upper edges.
  • Biohazard cleaning and disinfection on any array with accumulated guano, with all material bagged for safe biological waste disposal.
  • Multi property estate kits for new build streets where several neighbours coordinate a single mobilisation to share the MEWP and scaffold costs.

Why DIY Voids Your Warranty

Almost every solar array on a Greater Manchester new build estate is still well inside the 10 to 12 year product warranty and the 25 year performance warranty. DIY bird removal is one of the most common ways homeowners on those estates lose both at once. Every major panel manufacturer (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) writes warranty terms that exclude installations touched by any unaccredited third party.

The inverter warranty matters even more on a new build, because most new build developers specify SolarEdge optimisers, Enphase microinverters, Tesla Powerwall systems, GivEnergy hybrid inverters or Sungrow string inverters under tamper conditions that prevent any non accredited intervention on the DC side. A homeowner on a Trafford or Salford estate climbing onto the roof to pull a pigeon nest from beneath a panel will almost inevitably disturb the MC4 connectors or the optimiser clipped to the panel frame, and that single act can void a several thousand pound inverter warranty.

Our installation method is non penetrating throughout. The mesh clips to the panel frame underside only. No DC wiring is touched, no optimisers are moved, and both warranties stay intact. On multi property estate jobs we issue every homeowner a written warranty preservation statement they can produce if their installer ever questions the work.

New Build Estate Proofing in Greater Manchester

The new build estate boom across Greater Manchester (particularly in Salford, Trafford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Tameside and Wigan) has produced a continuous stretch of identical south facing solar arrays on near identical roof profiles. That uniformity is exactly what a feral pigeon colony will exploit, and we have visited estates where the bird problem has spread house by house down a single road within two to three years of completion. For these estates we offer a bulk proofing service, where multiple properties on a single street are proofed in a single mobilisation, which works out significantly cheaper per property and means the access equipment is amortised across several jobs. Talk to your neighbours and call us together for a discounted multi property quote.

The older suburban belt (Stockport, Altrincham, Sale, Didsbury, Chorlton) has lower density but the same pigeon pressure and the proofing approach is identical.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Greater Manchester

How quickly can you get to my Manchester property?

We aim to survey within 48 hours across the conurbation. Most of Greater Manchester is within an hour of our locally based technicians, and same week installation is usually achievable once you have accepted the quote.

What does solar bird proofing cost in Manchester?

Every quote is based on array size, perimeter, and access. Free quote on the phone, fixed written price after the survey. New build estate properties typically work out cheaper per property if neighbours coordinate a multi property booking. Call 0161 507 5940 .

Will the proofing void my solar panel or inverter warranty?

No. We use non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling, and we do not touch the DC wiring or optimisers. Both panel warranties stay intact, and SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties stay intact too. On new build estate jobs we provide a written warranty preservation statement.

I am on a new build estate and several neighbours have the same problem. Can you proof multiple properties at once?

Yes, and that is one of our most cost effective Manchester offers. Coordinating multiple properties on a single street means we can amortise the MEWP and travel across several jobs and offer a discounted per property price. Speak to your neighbours and call us together.

Do you do industrial and warehouse solar bird proofing?

Yes. The M60 and M62 corridor warehouse and distribution sheds carry some of the largest rooftop PV installations in the country, and we work with facilities managers and solar O&M contractors on planned proofing at commissioning or remedial proofing on existing arrays. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited with full RAMS as standard.

What about active nests under my panels?

Active nests with eggs or chicks cannot legally be removed during the breeding season under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. We will recommend a deterrent strategy for the immediate term and schedule the full proofing for after the breeding season ends.

Is the fire risk really significant?

Yes. Pigeon nests are dry sticks, feathers and droppings packed tight against DC cabling in a cavity that runs at well over 60 degrees Celsius on a clear summer day. Fire and Rescue services across the north west have flagged solar related roof fires linked to pest activity and debris in the cavity. Proofing is by far the cheapest insurance against that risk.

What qualifications do your technicians hold?

All our installation technicians hold BPCA Level 2 in Pest Management plus IPAF or PASMA for work at height. We carry full public liability insurance.
