Dorset sits in one of the highest solar irradiance bands in the UK, with Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch leading the south coast for domestic PV adoption per household. The combination of mild winters, the long Jurassic Coast and a strong retiree population with the disposable income to invest in renewable energy has produced a dense rooftop solar landscape from Weymouth in the west through to Christchurch in the east. JG Pest Control has been installing solar bird proofing across Dorset since the technology started arriving on local roofs, and our BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed several hundred Dorset installations across both the Bournemouth and Poole conurbation and the rural estates inland.

PV panels sit only a few inches above the tile, and that narrow gap has turned out, completely predictably in hindsight, to be exactly the kind of warm, dry, predator free cavity that feral pigeons spend their lives looking for. The bird pressure on Dorset arrays, a mix of feral pigeons inland and herring gulls right along the coast, makes solar bird proofing one of the more common specialist callouts we handle in the county.

JG Pest Control covers all of Dorset for specialist solar panel bird proofing, from single domestic arrays on the Sandbanks peninsula and the Bournemouth suburbs to larger rural installations across Sherborne, Blandford Forum and the Purbeck farms. Our technicians work coast to coast, and we know the difference a salt air environment makes to the choice of hardware (everything we fit within roughly five miles of the coast is marine grade galvanised or 316 stainless).

Bird proofing your solar panels is a specialist installation. Done properly, it preserves the manufacturer warranty on your panels and on your inverter (we work to the tamper conditions for SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow), complies with the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 around active nests, and lasts the full 25 year design life of the array.

Why Dorset Solar Arrays Have a Bird Problem

Dorset has two distinct bird pressures on solar PV. Along the coast, herring gulls and lesser black backed gulls are the dominant species. Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Lyme Regis and Swanage all have well established gull colonies that have learned to exploit the urban food supply and have spread from the traditional seafront roosts onto residential roofs further inland. Gulls do not usually nest under the cavity beneath a panel (too tight for the body) but they will perch on top, foul the panel surface and aggressively defend the airspace if their own nest sites on neighbouring chimney stacks are challenged.

Inland Dorset (Dorchester, Sherborne, Blandford Forum, Shaftesbury, Wimborne) is more of a feral pigeon picture. Pigeons love the 10 to 15 centimetre cavity beneath a solar panel, and once a single pair has nested successfully under one panel on a Dorset roof the rest of the local flock tends to follow.

A handful of our rural Dorset jobs also involve jackdaws and starlings, both of which will occasionally nest under a panel skirt.

If you have spotted bird activity on your Dorset solar array, call our team on 01305 547000 or contact us here.

Signs you have a problem:

  • White streaking on or below the array
  • Heavy gull activity on the roof
  • Cooing or scratching from the loft
  • Nesting material visible at the panel edge
  • Drop in your generation readings

Our Dorset Solar Bird Proofing Service

We work to a four part process. A survey within 48 hours of your initial call, often the same week. A fixed written quote based on the linear perimeter of the array, the access (single storey, MEWP, scaffold), and any biohazard cleaning required first. Pre installation nest removal where the Wildlife and Countryside Act allows it, and full guano clearance bagged for biological waste disposal. Then installation of 50mm galvanised or 316 stainless mesh skirting using non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that preserve your manufacturer warranty.

For coastal Dorset properties we always specify marine grade hardware. The salt spray off the Channel will rapidly degrade lesser specifications.

What We Install on a Dorset Solar Array

The Dorset coast is gull country, so the kit list usually includes more than just a cavity skirt.

  • Marine grade 316 stainless mesh skirt at 50mm aperture, supplied in sheet form (not flimsy rolls), tensioned around the array perimeter. We default to marine grade within five miles of the Channel coast because standard galvanised will rust through within a few seasons of Bournemouth salt air.
  • Dropper shaped stainless wire clips sized for the standard panel frame. Nothing drilled, nothing glued, nothing screwed into the frame, which is what keeps the panel manufacturer warranty intact.
  • Stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on the panel upper edges and surrounding ridge tiles, for any coastal property where gulls are perching on top of the array and fouling the surface. This is standard kit on the Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth and Lyme Regis seafront belt.
  • Wire posts and post and wire systems on the ridge of larger commercial flat roof installations along the Poole industrial estates and the Bournemouth airport business park.
  • Biohazard cleaning and disinfection on any array where there is accumulated guano in the cavity.

Why DIY Voids Your Warranty

A surprising number of Dorset solar arrays were installed during the post 2020 boom and are still well inside the 10 to 12 year product warranty and the 25 year performance warranty. DIY bird removal is one of the easiest ways to lose both. Almost every major panel manufacturer (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) writes warranty terms that exclude any installation that has been touched by an unaccredited third party, and that includes the homeowner with a hosepipe and a long brush.

The inverter is the more expensive half of the problem. Tesla Powerwall, Enphase microinverters, SolarEdge optimisers, GivEnergy hybrid inverters and Sungrow string inverters all carry similar tamper conditions. A homeowner pulling a nest out from beneath a panel will almost inevitably disturb the MC4 connectors or the optimiser modules clipped to the panel frame, and that single act can void a warranty worth several thousand pounds.

Our installation method touches none of the DC wiring or the optimisers. The mesh clips to the panel frame underside only, so both warranties stay intact.

Jurassic Coast Gull Pressure

Dorset’s south coast from Lyme Regis through West Bay, Weymouth, Swanage and round into Poole Harbour sees some of the heaviest urban gull pressure on the south coast. The Bournemouth and Poole conurbation in particular has a substantial rooftop nesting gull population, and any solar array within sight of the seafront is a candidate for both surface fouling and aggressive territorial behaviour during the breeding season. We work with several Bournemouth and Poole solar installers to fit gull proofing at the time of original panel installation, which is significantly cheaper than retrofitting after a colony has established.

The rural and inland Dorset picture (the Blackmore Vale, the Cranborne Chase, the Purbeck ridge) is dominated by feral pigeons and the occasional starling or jackdaw. Cavity skirting is usually enough.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Dorset

How quickly can you survey my Dorset property?

We aim to survey within 48 hours of your call. Most of Dorset is within an hour of our locally based technicians, and same week installation is usually achievable once you have accepted the quote.

What does solar bird proofing cost in Dorset?

Every quote is based on array size, perimeter, and access. Single storey domestic installations are at the lower end, two storey suburban properties with MEWP requirements are higher, and commercial or warehouse arrays scale with the linear metres of perimeter. We provide a free quote on the phone and a fixed written price after the survey. Call 01305 547000 .

Will the proofing void my solar panel or inverter warranty?

No. We use non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling or modifying anything, and we do not disturb the DC wiring, MC4 connectors or optimisers. Both the panel product warranty and the performance warranty stay intact, and the Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties stay intact too. DIY removal almost always voids them.

Is the gull issue really worse on the coast?

Yes, substantially. Bournemouth and Poole have one of the larger urban roof nesting gull populations in southern England, and the Weymouth and Lyme Regis seafronts are similar. Any property within roughly half a mile of the seafront should expect gull pressure on the panel surface as well as feral pigeon pressure in the cavity beneath.

Do you do marine grade installations?

Yes. For any property within five miles of the coast we specify marine grade galvanised steel or 316 stainless clips and mesh. Lesser specifications corrode rapidly in salt air, sometimes within a couple of years, which is why we never quote standard hardware for coastal properties.

What if I have active nests already?

Nest removal during the breeding season is restricted by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If there is an active gull or pigeon nest with eggs or chicks we cannot legally remove it until the chicks have fledged. Our surveyor will explain the timing and propose a deterrent strategy for the immediate term.

Do you cover commercial and rural arrays in Dorset?

Yes. We work on commercial PV across the Poole industrial estates and on rural and farm scale solar arrays across the Blackmore Vale, the Purbeck farms and the Sherborne area. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited with full RAMS as standard.

What qualifications do your technicians hold?

All our installation technicians hold BPCA Level 2 in Pest Management plus IPAF or PASMA for work at height. We carry full public liability insurance.
