Cornwall has the highest solar irradiance of any English county and one of the highest densities of large rural and farm scale solar installations in the country. From the domestic arrays on the granite cottages of Penzance, Falmouth and Truro through to the multi acre ground mount and large rooftop arrays on the Cornish farms, the south west peninsula has become a national leader in solar generation. JG Pest Control has been doing pest work across the peninsula for more than a decade, and our BPCA Level 2 Certified Technicians have proofed solar arrays right across Cornwall from cliff top properties on the Lizard to large barn roof installations on the Bodmin Moor fringe.
PV panels sit only a few inches above the roof, and that narrow gap is exactly the sort of warm, dry, predator free cavity that any opportunistic bird will exploit. In Cornwall the dominant exploiter is the herring gull, which does not nest in the cavity itself but treats the panel surface as prime coastal real estate. Cornish gulls are bigger, bolder and more numerous than feral pigeons, and a single breeding season of unchecked gull activity on a panel array can knock generation back by 30 percent or more.

JG Pest Control covers the whole of Cornwall for specialist solar panel bird proofing, from coastal domestic installations in St Ives, Newquay and Padstow through to large rural arrays around Bodmin, Liskeard and Launceston. Our technicians work the full length of the county, and because almost every Cornish property is within easy reach of the coast we specify marine grade hardware on virtually every job.
Solar bird proofing in Cornwall is a specialist service. The gull pressure is significantly heavier than in inland counties, the access is often awkward (single track lanes, exposed cliff top sites, working in coastal winds), and the salt air will rapidly destroy any installation that does not use the correct hardware. We also work to the warranty conditions for SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverters so nothing we do puts your inverter at risk.

Why Cornish Solar Arrays Are a Magnet for Gulls
Cornwall’s bird problem on rooftop solar is dominated by the herring gull, with lesser black backed gulls a strong second and increasing numbers of yellow legged gulls in the far west. These are large, intelligent birds, far heavier than a feral pigeon, and they treat almost every flat or low pitched roof in the county as either a perching site or a potential nesting platform.
Gulls do not usually nest in the cavity beneath a solar panel (their bodies are too large for the 10 to 15 centimetre gap) but they will sit on top of the array for hours at a time, foul the panel surface heavily with droppings that are highly acidic and quickly etch into the panel glass, and aggressively defend the airspace if their own nesting sites on the chimney stack or neighbouring roofs are challenged. We have visited Cornish properties where gull droppings on the panel array had reduced generation by close to 30 percent within a single breeding season.
Inland Cornwall (Bodmin, Liskeard, Camelford, Launceston, Callington) also has a feral pigeon problem, and on rural farms and barns we see jackdaws, starlings and even the occasional pair of barn owls nesting in the cavity beneath larger PV arrays.
If gulls or pigeons are fouling your Cornish solar array, call us on 01637 800572 or contact us here.
Signs you have a problem:
- Gulls perching on the array daily
- Heavy white streaking on panel glass
- Aggressive dive bombing during breeding season
- Cooing or scratching beneath the roof
- Generation readings falling below baseline
Our Cornwall Solar Bird Proofing Service
We work to a clear four part process. A survey within 48 hours of your call (longer if you are in the far west of the peninsula, but we will always give you a date). A fixed written quote covering linear perimeter, access (most Cornish jobs need MEWP, some larger commercial sites need scaffold), and any required nest removal and biohazard cleaning. Pre installation cleaning and nest removal subject to the Wildlife and Countryside Act seasonal restrictions. Then installation of 50mm marine grade galvanised or 316 stainless mesh skirting and (for properties with heavy gull pressure on the panel tops) supplementary stainless polycarbonate gull spikes along the ridge and panel upper edges.
Everything is non penetrating, warranty preserving, and guaranteed in writing.

What We Install on a Cornish Solar Array
Cornwall is gull country first and salt air country second. The kit list is weighted accordingly.
- Stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on the panel upper edges, the ridge tiles and any adjacent chimney stacks. On a typical Cornish coastal job this is at least half of the work, because the main pressure is surface perching rather than cavity nesting.
- 50mm 316 stainless mesh skirt at the panel cavity, supplied in sheet form. We use 316 stainless almost everywhere in Cornwall because anything less will fail in the salt air, sometimes within two seasons.
- Dropper shaped stainless wire clips for the mesh, designed for the standard panel frame profile and fitted without drilling, gluing or screwing anything into the frame itself.
- Wire posts and post and wire systems on commercial flat roof installations across the Camborne, Redruth and St Austell industrial estates, where the linear perimeter justifies a more substantial gull deterrent.
- Biohazard cleaning and disinfection for any array with accumulated guano on the surface or in the cavity, with all material bagged for safe biological waste disposal.
Why DIY Voids Your Warranty (and is Genuinely Dangerous in Cornwall)
The Cornish gull is one of the few species in the UK that will actively attack a human approaching a nest, particularly during the May to August chick rearing window. That makes DIY bird removal on a Cornish coastal roof not just unwise from a warranty point of view but genuinely physically dangerous. Several Cornish A&E departments treat gull strike injuries every summer, and we have surveyed properties where the homeowner had abandoned a DIY attempt because the parent birds drove them off the roof.
Setting the physical danger aside, the warranty position is the same as anywhere else in the UK. Solar panels carry a 10 to 12 year product warranty and a 25 year performance warranty, and almost every major panel manufacturer (Trina, JA Solar, LG, REC, Jinko, SunPower, Q Cells) will void both if any unaccredited third party touches the installation. The inverter brands (SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy, Sungrow) apply the same logic to the DC side wiring and optimisers. A homeowner pulling a nest out from beneath a Cornish panel can easily lose a warranty worth several thousand pounds in addition to the dive bombing.
Our installation method is non penetrating throughout. Mesh clips to the panel frame underside, nothing touches the DC side, both warranties stay intact, and our technicians work under method statements designed for active gull territories.
Why the Cornish Gull Problem is Different
Herring gulls in Cornwall are bigger than the ones you find further up the east coast, and they are aggressively territorial during the breeding season (April to August). On any cliff top or harbour side property in St Ives, Newquay, Padstow, Falmouth, Penzance, Mevagissey or Polperro we routinely see gulls that have lost most of their fear of humans, will sit on a solar array all day if undisturbed, and will dive bomb anyone who approaches a roof during chick rearing. This is one reason DIY removal is not just unwise but actively dangerous in Cornwall, and is why our installations always include written method statements for working safely around active gull territories.
Inland Cornwall (the Bodmin Moor fringe, the Liskeard and Launceston farms, the upper Tamar valley) is mostly feral pigeon and jackdaw country, with the occasional starling colony, and the proofing approach is simpler.

Frequently Asked Questions: Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Cornwall
How quickly can you get to my Cornwall property?
We aim to survey within 48 hours for east Cornwall and within a week for the far west. Our locally based technicians cover the whole peninsula. Same week installation is usually achievable once you have accepted the quote, although in the height of summer we sometimes have a short lead time.
What does solar bird proofing cost in Cornwall?
Every quote is based on array size, perimeter, and access. We provide a free quote on the phone and a fixed written price after the survey. The cost is always far less than panel replacement or warranty loss. Call 01637 800572 .
Will the proofing void my solar panel or inverter warranty?
No. We use non penetrating dropper shaped stainless clips that attach to the underside of the panel frame without drilling, and we do not touch the DC wiring or the optimisers. Both the panel product and performance warranties stay intact, and the SolarEdge, Enphase, Tesla, GivEnergy and Sungrow inverter warranties stay intact too. DIY removal almost always voids both, on top of being physically dangerous around active Cornish gull nests.
My problem is gulls, not pigeons. Can you proof for gulls?
Yes, and that is the most common Cornish callout. Gulls do not usually nest under the panels but they perch on top, foul the surface, and aggressively defend their territory. The standard approach combines cavity skirting (to stop any opportunistic pigeon or jackdaw activity underneath) with supplementary stainless polycarbonate gull spikes on the panel tops and the surrounding ridge.
Is the salt air a problem for the proofing hardware?
It is for cheap or non specified hardware. Standard galvanised steel will rust through within a few years on a coastal property. Everything we fit in Cornwall is marine grade galvanised or 316 stainless, rated for the full 25 year design life of the panels themselves.
What about active gull nests?
Active gull nests with eggs or chicks cannot legally be removed during the breeding season (typically April to August) under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If we find active nests we will propose a deterrent and exclusion strategy for the immediate term and schedule the full proofing for after the breeding season.
Do you cover commercial and farm scale solar in Cornwall?
Yes. We work on agricultural solar across the Cornish farms, on commercial roofs in the Camborne, Redruth and St Austell industrial estates, and on hospitality and hotel installations along the coast. CHAS and SafeContractor accredited with full RAMS as standard.
What qualifications do your technicians hold?
All our installation technicians hold BPCA Level 2 in Pest Management plus IPAF or PASMA for work at height. We carry full public liability insurance.
