Boxing Day in Birmingham is one of the biggest single trading days of the year. The Bullring, Grand Central and Mailbox reopen to queues that have been waiting since 5am, Selfridges and the food court tenants run at twice the standard rate, and the hotel cluster from Brindleyplace through to Solihull and the airport corridor holds the visitor overflow from the Christmas-NY week. That is exactly when rodent pressure peaks: kitchens have been at full lift for three days, bins are on a reduced collection rota, deliveries have piled up, and the warm Christmas Eve trading has left food waste in places the standard rota does not catch. JG Pest Control is open Boxing Day, every day either side of it, and every other day of the year except Christmas Day itself.

Almost every other pest control firm in the West Midlands shuts from Christmas Eve through to 2 January. They do not answer the phone, they do not run callouts, and they will not be back on the road until the first Monday of the new year. JG runs the opposite pattern. Our Birmingham team is on the road Christmas Eve, off on Christmas Day (the only day of the year we are closed), and back on the road Boxing Day morning through New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day itself. We are open every weekend and every UK bank holiday except Christmas Day.

If you run a hotel, restaurant, bar, retail unit or letting business in Birmingham and have ever had a rodent or cockroach problem land on Boxing Day, you already know how few firms will answer. This page sets out exactly what we cover through the Christmas window and how fast we can get a technician to your door.

Why Boxing Day Pest Control Matters in Birmingham

The Christmas week in Birmingham creates a perfect storm for pest activity. The Bullring, Grand Central and Mailbox food courts trade at heightened volume from Christmas Eve through to New Year’s Day, with kitchens absorbing a full week of bins on a reduced collection rota. Selfridges and the surrounding department stores reopen on Boxing Day to peak footfall with food and packaging waste cycling through hospitality outlets at twice the usual rate. Hotels around the NEC, ICC, Brindleyplace and the airport corridor hold extended-stay Christmas-NY visitors, with bed bug pressure climbing through the week as room occupancy turns over. Restaurants and bars across Broad Street, Hurst Street and the Chinese Quarter that close for one day on Christmas Day reopen on Boxing Day to packed sittings, and rodents that found warm voids on the Christmas Eve close see plenty of food on the Boxing Day reopen.

The Christmas window is when small rodent populations become large rodent populations. A sighting on Boxing Day morning cannot wait for the first Monday of January.

Our hours through the Birmingham Christmas window

Here is exactly when our Birmingham team is on the road across the Christmas and New Year window. Christmas Eve is a full working day. Christmas Day is closed (the only day of the year). Boxing Day is a full working day with extra crews on standby for retail and hospitality. Every day between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve is a working day. New Year’s Day is a working day. We are not back-to-business on 2 January like the rest of the West Midlands industry: we never stopped trading except for Christmas Day itself.

Boxing Day Hot Spots across Birmingham

The pattern across Birmingham Boxing Day pest calls is consistent year on year. The Bullring, Grand Central and Selfridges food courts generate rodent and cockroach calls within hours of opening as Boxing Day footfall stresses already-strained kitchens. Hotel chains around the NEC, ICC and Brindleyplace see bed bug callouts climb through the Christmas-NY week as extended-stay rooms cycle and visitor luggage moves through. Restaurants on Broad Street, Hurst Street and the Chinese Quarter reopen on Boxing Day to packed sittings and frequently find that the warm Christmas Eve trading has left food waste in voids where bins did not reach during the reduced collection rota. Out across the residential belt from Sutton Coldfield to Edgbaston, mouse and rat calls climb as heating draws rodents indoors and Christmas tree storage in lofts creates new harbourage. The Christmas Eve and Boxing Day weather, often cold and wet, drives the indoor migration sharply.

The common thread is the four-day gap. Most pest firms create a four-day silence from Christmas Eve to 28 December. JG closes for one day.
