If the bites are on your ankles and lower legs and you felt them immediately, it’s almost certainly fleas. If they appeared on your torso, neck or arms overnight and you didn’t feel a thing, it’s bed bugs.
- Fleas: ankles/lower legs, felt at once, near pets
- Bed bugs: torso/neck/arms, noticed in the morning, lines or clusters of three
- Either way - the evidence trail in the home confirms which pest you actually have
Waking up with itchy red bumps and no idea what caused them is unsettling. Bed bug bites and flea bites look superficially similar but tell two very different pest stories - and the wrong identification leads to the wrong treatment. Here is how to tell them apart with reasonable confidence.
Bed Bug vs Flea Bites at a Glance
| Feature | Bed Bug Bites | Flea Bites |
|---|---|---|
| Location on body | Torso, neck, arms, hands, upper legs | Ankles and lower legs almost exclusively |
| Time felt | Hours later or the next morning | Immediately - you may see the flea jump away |
| Pattern | Groups of three or in straight lines | Clusters of small dots, often randomly grouped |
| Appearance | Raised red bump, 5-10mm, small central dot | Smaller, harder bump, often darker red centre |
| Where the pest lives | Mattress seams, bed frame, headboard, behind skirting | Pet bedding, carpet, sofa fibres |
| Trigger | Travel, second-hand furniture, visitors | Pet brought them in, or vacant house with prior infestation |
| Best treatment | Heat treatment, chemical or freeze | Insecticide spray plus pet treatment |
Where the Bites Appear on Your Body
This is the single most reliable clue.
- Bed bug bites typically appear on the torso, neck, arms, hands and upper legs - the parts of you exposed while sleeping. They often appear in groups of three or in straight lines (bed bugs feed multiple times in one session as they probe for blood vessels).
- Flea bites are almost always on the ankles and lower legs. Fleas jump up from the floor or pet bedding, feed, and drop off - so they rarely bite higher up.
When You Notice the Bite
Bed bugs inject an anaesthetic when they feed, so you don’t feel the bite at the time. Most people only notice bed bug bites hours later, or the next morning when itching begins. Flea bites, by contrast, are felt almost immediately - you may notice a nip and see the flea jump away.
Where the Pest Is Living
Once you suspect one or the other, look for confirming evidence in the right place.
Bed bug evidence is in the bedroom
- Dark spots or smears on the mattress, sheets and headboard (digested blood)
- Pale shed exoskeletons in mattress seams and bed frame joints
- Live bugs in cracks, drawer joints, behind picture frames
- A sweet, almond-like odour in heavy infestations
Flea evidence is wherever pets spend time
- Black specks (flea dirt) in pet bedding and carpet fibres
- Pets scratching, biting at their fur, or showing red irritated skin
- Tiny dark insects jumping when carpet is disturbed
- White socks worn around the house pick up fleas quickly - a useful diagnostic test
Other Pests That Bite
If neither set of signs match, consider:
- Mosquito bites - raised welts felt immediately, itch right away, usually one at a time
- Spider bites - rare in the UK; localised swelling and a small puncture mark
- Cockroach bites - very rare, only in heavy infestations; usually on hands or face
- Carpet beetle larvae - can cause skin irritation that looks like bites without actually biting
What to Do Next
If it is fleas, see our flea control service page for treatment options. Don’t treat your home without also treating your pet - the problem comes back otherwise.
If it is bed bugs, the infestation has likely been present for weeks already - bed bugs are excellent hiders. See our signs of bed bugs guide and the bed bug bites page for detail. Heat treatment is the fastest route to eradication.
Either way, a survey by a RSPH (BPCA) Level 2 certified and trainee technician is the quickest way to confirm the pest and start treatment. Same-day response available across our service area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can bed bugs bite through pyjamas or sheets?
No - bed bugs cannot bite through fabric. They feed on exposed skin. Wearing more clothing in bed reduces exposure but does not solve the infestation.
Why do bites appear in a line?
A single bed bug feeds multiple times in one session as it probes for a blood vessel. That feeding sequence on adjacent skin produces the classic “breakfast, lunch, dinner” line of three bites.
If I see no fleas, can it still be fleas?
Yes. Adult fleas spend most of their time in pet bedding and carpet. Walk around in white socks for 20 minutes - if you pick up small dark moving specks, you have fleas.
Do bed bugs and fleas spread disease?
Bed bugs are not known to transmit any disease to humans. Fleas can transmit tapeworm and have historically carried plague, though disease transmission is extremely rare in modern UK homes.
Can I treat either myself?
Flea infestations can sometimes be cleared with thorough pet treatment and a strong household insecticide spray. Bed bugs almost always require professional treatment - they hide in cracks consumer sprays can’t reach, the eggs resist most chemicals, and the colony can survive months between feeds.
