Wasp nests are the single most time-critical pest call JG Pest Control take in the summer months. A nest above a doorway or in a busy garden is an immediate stinging risk to families, pets and anyone with a venom allergy. JG provide same-day wasp nest removal across the whole of the UK, with same-day cover in major cities, 24-hour response across mainland Britain, and every job carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician.
This is the JG hub for wasp problems in the UK. It covers identification, nest behaviour, the signs you should never try to deal with yourself, what professional treatment involves, and why a single phone call is almost always the right next step. If you have a nest, call 0330 053 9002 for a free phone quote.

About Wasps in the UK
The UK has nine social wasp species, but two are responsible for the overwhelming majority of pest calls: the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica). Both are 12 to 17 mm long with the classic black-and-yellow striped abdomen. They are easily confused with hornets, which are larger (18 to 25 mm) and have a more brown or chestnut colouring on the thorax.
A wasp nest starts in spring with a single overwintered queen who builds a golf-ball-sized starter nest and lays the first batch of workers. By July a nest of 1,500 to 3,000 workers is typical, by August or September a mature nest can hold 5,000 to 10,000. Nest material is chewed wood pulp (“wasp paper”) and the structure can become as large as a football, sometimes bigger in lofts and outbuildings.
UK wasp activity peaks August to October, when the colony stops producing brood, the workers run out of larvae to feed (which had been their carbohydrate source), and they switch to scavenging sweet food. This is the period when wasps become aggressively interested in beer gardens, picnics and bin areas, and the period when professional removal demand triples.

Why Wasps are a Problem
Wasps perform genuinely useful work in a garden ecosystem (they are important predators of caterpillars and other insects), but a nest near a home is a clear hazard.
The first problem is stings. Unlike honeybees, wasps can sting multiple times. A disturbed colony will defend the nest, and a single person can receive dozens of stings if they accidentally mow over an underground entry, prune a hedge containing a nest, or open a loft hatch into a nest. Around 3% of the UK population is at meaningful risk of anaphylaxis from a wasp sting, and the only reliable indication that someone falls into that group is to have had a previous reaction. UK Office for National Statistics data records 2 to 9 deaths a year from hymenoptera stings.
The second problem is location. A nest in a loft, cavity wall, garage or shed can stay invisible until July or August, by which point it is large and very active. Nests in soffit boxes, behind fascia and in eaves voids are also routinely encountered. Removal of these requires equipment and PPE that no homeowner has.
The third problem is structural damage. A long-running nest in a loft can produce a paper structure several feet across, with associated frass and wasp carcasses. Once abandoned at the end of the season, the same nest cavity is often re-used or re-colonised in subsequent years.
Signs of a Nest Nearby
- Steady stream of wasps in and out of a single point
- Buzzing or rustling inside a loft or wall cavity
- Wasps repeatedly disappearing under tiles or into airbricks
- A grey, papery structure in a shed, loft or outbuilding
- Sudden spike in wasps around the property
- Dead wasps appearing inside the property in late summer
Professional vs DIY: Why You Should Not Treat a Wasp Nest Yourself
The single most-Googled DIY wasp solution (a can of foam from the supermarket sprayed at dusk) is also the most likely to send someone to A&E. A nest disturbed in the wrong way produces a defensive swarm that can chase a person 50 metres or more, sting multiple times each, and is genuinely dangerous to anyone with an undiagnosed allergy.
The risks are higher than people realise. Nest treatment requires full bee-keeper-style PPE, a long-reach insecticide applicator, knowledge of nest behaviour, and a plan for getting the operator out of the area while the wasps are still active. None of those are available in a typical garden shed. Even experienced pest technicians treat wasp work with respect.
Professional treatment is fast (most domestic wasp nests are dealt with in 15 to 30 minutes), safe, and guaranteed. The standard approach is a long-reach application of a professional insecticide dust into the nest entrance. Returning foragers carry the dust into the nest, and the entire colony is dead within hours. The nest itself can usually be left in place (wasps do not re-use nests, despite the myth) and we will advise on whether physical removal is sensible.

Our Wasp Nest Removal Process
- Phone diagnosis. A free 2 to 5 minute call to confirm the species (wasp vs honeybee vs hornet is the critical question), find out where the nest is, and book the visit. We can usually quote a fixed price for the job on the call.
- Same-day attendance where possible. Wasp nest removal is the most time-critical job JG do, and in major cities we run a same-day service throughout the wasp season.
- Treatment. A BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician applies a professional insecticide dust into the nest entry point using a long-reach lance. Workers carry the dust into the nest, and the colony is dead within 24 hours. Most domestic jobs are done in under 30 minutes.
- Honeybee swarms. If the call turns out to be a honeybee swarm rather than a wasp nest, we will say so and refer you to your local beekeeping association at no charge. Honeybees are protected and we will not treat them where a relocation is possible.
- Aftercare and guarantee. Some residual activity (returning foragers, dying workers) is normal for 24 to 48 hours. Every treatment is guaranteed: if the nest is still active after 7 days, we come back at no extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions: Wasps
How quickly can you get to me?
Same-day cover is standard during wasp season (June to October) across London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, Newcastle and Essex. Anywhere else in mainland UK we aim to be on site within 24 hours. Out of hours our national line on 0330 053 9002 rolls 24/7.
Are you available weekends and bank holidays?
Yes. JG Pest Control is open every weekend, every bank holiday except Christmas Day, with the phone line staffed early in the morning through to late in the evening. Wasp nests do not respect weekends, and August bank holiday is one of the busiest periods of the year for wasp call-outs.
Will the treatment harm my pets or children?
Treatment is targeted at the nest entry point using professional insecticide dust applied with a long-reach lance. There is no broadcast spraying, and dust does not migrate. Pets and children stay indoors during treatment and for around 2 hours afterwards as a precaution. We brief you fully before treatment starts.
Do I need to leave the property?
No. Wasp nest removal is normally done in 15 to 30 minutes with you staying inside. The technician works from outside or from the loft hatch, and there is no need to vacate.
How much does wasp nest removal cost?
A typical domestic wasp nest is a fixed-price call-out, quoted on the phone. Awkward nests (high reach, multiple nests on one property) are priced at the door. Call 0330 053 9002 for a free quote.
Is it really a wasp nest, or could it be honeybees?
If the insects are slim, yellow and shiny black, with a clear waist, they are wasps. If they are furrier, browner and tend to bumble more than dart, they are likely honeybees or bumblebees, which JG do not treat. We confirm the species on the phone and will refer honeybee swarms to a local beekeeping association free of charge.
Should I leave the nest alone? It is not bothering anyone.
If the nest is genuinely out of the way (high in a tree at the bottom of a large garden, in an isolated outbuilding) you may choose to leave it and the colony will die out naturally in the first hard frost. If it is near a doorway, in the eaves of the house, in a loft you need to access, or anywhere children or pets pass through, we recommend professional removal.
Will more wasps come back to the same nest next year?
No. Wasps do not re-use old nests. A new colony may build in the same general area (good locations are limited) but the old paper nest is biologically inert once the colony dies.
Are your technicians qualified?
Every job is carried out by a BPCA Level 2 Certified Technician, the recognised UK industry qualification for pest management. JG Pest Control was founded in 2010 and has been treating wasp nests across the UK for more than 15 years.
