Caterpillar Pest Control

Why Caterpillars Are a Pest Problem

Certain species of caterpillars - especially the box tree caterpillar - eat the leaves of shrubs and bushes in and around garden areas. Box tree caterpillars are named after what they eat most: box trees. Box trees are a popular choice in home gardens, public parks and historic landscapes.

Box trees, sometimes called box hedges, are notoriously hardy. That changed with the introduction of the box tree caterpillar. Box tree moths (the post-larval form) hatch, fly to neighbouring box trees and lay eggs under their leaves. When the eggs hatch, young caterpillars feed on the leaves, pupate, become moths, and the process repeats.

This life cycle happens multiple times in a year. In a single season, all the green of a box hedge can be completely consumed by an infestation.
