Bald patches appearing in wool carpets - under the sofa, along skirting boards, in the corners of quiet rooms? That is carpet moth, and it will keep eating until the larvae are treated. JG Pest Control carries out professional carpet moth treatment across the UK, including heat treatment for severe infestations. We are open every day except Christmas Day, early until late.
What is a carpet moth?
“Carpet moth” usually means the case-bearing clothes moth, a small (around 7mm) dull, silvery-brown moth whose larvae feed on keratin - the protein in wool, silk, feathers and animal hair. The adult moths do no eating at all and are weak, reluctant flyers that scuttle and hop near floor level. The damage is done by the larvae, each living inside a portable case of spun silk and carpet fibres, grazing away out of sight.
Signs of carpet moth
- Threadbare patches in wool or wool-mix carpet, classically in undisturbed spots: under furniture, along skirting, inside cupboards, under beds.
- Larval cases - rice-grain-sized tubes, often carpet-coloured, stuck to the carpet edge, skirting or walls.
- Small moths running or fluttering weakly at floor level when disturbed.
- Webbing or gritty debris in the carpet pile in affected corners.
Loft hatches and rooms below lofts deserve a special check - old bird nests and stored woollens in lofts are classic source populations.
Why carpet moths are hard to beat with sprays
The larvae live deep in the pile and under furniture, eggs are tucked into the carpet base, and the case protects larvae from light contact with shop insecticides. Killing the adults you can see does nothing about the generation already eating. That is why DIY attempts so often “work” for three weeks and then the holes spread again.
Professional carpet moth treatment
Our technicians treat all affected rooms with professional residual products that reach the base of the pile, target the edges, gaps and under-furniture zones where larvae feed, and identify the source - which is often a forgotten rug, the loft, or a bird nest in the eaves. For severe or repeat infestations, heat treatment kills every life stage including eggs in a single visit, with no chemical residue. See our moth control service for the wider picture, including clothes moths in wardrobes. Every visit is by an RSPH (BPCA) Level 2 certified or trainee technician and the work is guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
They follow keratin: wool carpets, rugs, stored textiles, pet hair build-up and old bird nests. They prefer quiet, dark, undisturbed areas, which is why damage starts under furniture rather than in walkways.
Both make holes. Carpet moth leaves silk cases and webbing; carpet beetle larvae are hairy “woolly bears” that leave bristly shed skins. The treatments differ, so identification first - send us a photo if unsure.
Yes. Larvae and egg-laying females move along skirting and under doors into other rooms, and eggs travel on rugs and second-hand furniture. Treating only the room you noticed usually is not enough.
Vacuuming well and often is genuinely useful - it removes eggs and food debris - but it cannot reach larvae deep in the pile or under fitted furniture. Combine it with professional treatment for a lasting result.
