Preventing bed bugs completely is difficult, but precautions can be taken.
When travelling
Ensure your belongings, luggage and clothes are either treated, or washed at high temperatures. Check beds for common signs of bed bugs and try to keep your belongings away from them. It’s advised you avoid storing suitcases in warm areas of your house. A garage or shed is ideal as storing in cooler areas can prevent bed bugs from infesting your luggage.
At home
Vacuum your house regularly, and thoroughly, paying particular attention to headboards, bed frames and surrounding floor areas. Unfortunately, vacuuming will not remove an existing bed bug problem, but it may help reduce the chances of an infestation occurring. Ensure you empty the vacuum and dispose of waste completely to avoid the transfer of bed bugs to new areas. These pests will look for places to hide, so reduce clutter.
Bed bugs survive by regularly reproducing as close to their host as possible and are excellent at hiding, so you won’t often see them in the early stages of an infestation.
Prevention is tough, so the most important thing to do is seek professional help as soon as you believe you have a problem.
Not only can JG tackle the pests, we can treat luggage and belongings with our heat or freeze treatments, where chemicals cannot be used. Normally, it won’t be necessary to get rid of belongings; however if these situations arise, JG Pest Control also provides a disposal service.
